Not even close. I'm not sure how familiar with your navy's ranks you are, but I googled it and I'm what you guys would call a "Vanemmadrus" (probably). What we call a fireman, since I work in the engineering department . I do a lot of basic maintenance and bullshit like cleaning out bilges.
Only person I outrank is my replacement, who's a pay grade below me and who just got out of boot camp. In about 20 days I go to machinery technician school, and when I graduate that I'll be a petty officer third class (Nooremmaat).
I'm applying to officer candidate school, which already rejected me twice. If I make it this time, I'll be an ensign (lipnik) and have some kind of authority but no experience, sooo... yeah.
Engineering sounds interesting to me, though simple labor to start with isn't very appealing indeed.
As far as ensign/lipnik goes... well, it is an odd rank, because those who finish officer school (actually, our only higher military school) become Lieutenant Junior Grade/Nooremleitnant straight away. I don't even know how you're supposed to get that rank.
