CDPR announced awhile ago that they will be releasing a large expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 called Phantom Liberty and that it would be the one and only expansion for the game instead of the original 2 they had planned. Along with the expansion will be a major overhaul to the entire game in the form of a large patch (for free); dubbed "Update 2.0". All of this stems from the infamously premature launch of the game 3 years ago, when the game released in an utterly broken and unfinished state, while missing a litany of promised and advertised features. 3 years later with nearly all of the bugs fixed and many of the promised features being restored, we're finally arriving to the intended version of the game that was promised back in 2018. Version 2.0 completely overhauls the entire game, including the combat system, graphics, animations, weapons, clothing system, vehicles, cyberware, level progression, AI system, world interactivity, police & crime system, gang activity, perk & skills system, and so on. All in an attempt to create a living and breathing world where anything can happen as was originally promised.

A further listing of said features one can expect from patch 2.0 can be found below:
  1. New area: PL will allow us to visit dog town, a new area in Pacifica only accessible through PL. you can only visit the area once you have started the dlc and after a point, you can enter and exit dogtown freely. The new area will also bring a bunch of new vendors and side quests as well as gigs.
  2. New weapons, clothes and vehicles: while details are scarce on this, we do know that we are getting a bunch of new weapons, clothing and vehicles added to the game, some exclusive to the dlc.
  3. Narrative and choices: narrative and choices have a huge impact on how PL plays and will have different endings based on your relationships with the side characters like songbird or reed. This DLC will also provide us with a new ending for the main game. The DLC will take place before the events of the ending and will be available after placide and voodoo boys mission.
  4. Reworked skill tree and new skills: the skill tree has gone a complete rework. Now skills are actual skills or new play styles unlockables, instead of percentage based buffs. There is also a new relic skill attribute, that will apparently bring a new gameplay style or changes to the skill system. Some new skills seen are finishers and bullet deflection with katanas.
  5. Armour and cosmetics: now armour and defence stats are not tied to clothing, meaning you can wear whatever you want. Now armor stats are tied to cyberware, which will change your playstyle based on the cyberware you implant. The cyberware system has also gone a complete change and has introduced cyberpsychosis mechanic(previously available as a mod), which will not allow you to fully deck yourself with cyberware and will debuff your stats if you have too many implants. Also there is a new animation system where V can now see cyberware installation from their perspective.
  6. Reworked police and notoriety system: police has gone through a complete change and now will engage in combat and chases when a crime is committed. A 1 star response will lead to investigation, while a 4 star response will have max tac deployed on you. Max tac deployment will also lead to a mini boss fight of sorts.
  7. Vehicle combat: now players can shoot out of their vehicles and can also use vehicles with in built weapons to engage in vehicular combat.
  8. Graphics rework and face models updated: the game will update and improve graphics and character models of many characters, mainly Johnny silver hand and for the same has also updated the Pc requirements for the game.
  9. New enemy types and enhanced AI: enemy variety and AI will see a massive improvement to the game.
  10. Vehicle purchasing and stealing: now vehicles will not be purchasable via messages but will be purchasable via a new website. Vehicles can be stolen, but there will be a small mission or objective attached to the same.
  11. UI/UX changes: the new update is set to bring various UI and UX improvements as seen in some of the new gameplay footage. Just like the UI for forwarding time in game, the UI for calls, messages and overall menus will see huge new improvements.
  12. Expansion can be accessed and started separately from the main game just like Witcher 3.
  13. More diverse and less similar weapons: the looter shooter system of same guns with different stats is gonna be changed to more diverse and fleshed out arsenal of weapons. Basically the game will either reduce the no. of same guns with different stats or completely remove them.
  14. More open world activities: thought not specifically confirmed, the game director stated in an interview with IGN that there will me more interactions throughout the open world and more activities to do in free roam.
  15. Pre order bonus: while you shouldn’t pre order, those who do wish to will get access to an exclusive Quadra muscle car and those with GOG rewards will get access to exclusive cosmetics and weapons like Geralts sword from The Witcher series and much more.

Phantom Liberty will be the only expansion for Cyberpunk unfortunately, but it's set to still be a massive one with a very large amount of content that not only takes place in a new district in Night City called Dogtown, but will also be adding new content that stacks on top of the base game (such as overhauling the unfinished Pacifica district) with a continuation of many of the existing side quests with returning characters. The expansion will also add 3 new radio stations, new cyberware, vehicles, weapons, etc. So much is set to change with not just 2.0 but also Phantom Liberty that it's advised to start a new game rather than pick up where you left off.

If you've held off this long without buying the game, then I strongly recommend to keep waiting until 2.0 & Phantom Liberty releases, as the current game is honestly not worth it yet with these changes coming next month. CDPR devs have also recommended this approach on Twitter. Once they're released I'd recommend grabbing the game on sale as it regularly discounts at 50% off, so you can finally enjoy the game as it was originally meant to be.

As for what happens after 2.0/PL, the expansion is set to be CDPR's swan song for their RED Engine and will likely be no more major patches after this release. One of the devs have mentioned they might make an exception for small additions, but otherwise future patches will just be hotfixes and maintenance updates. A GOTY/Complete Edition is set to release later this year per an investor call with the CEO, which will just be the base game and Phantom Liberty bundled together. Beyond this, the journey for Cyberpunk 2077 will be over and the road for "Project Orion" begins with the move to Unreal Engine 5 for Cyberpunk's direct sequel which will be developed by a new internal team being built in Boston, Massachusetts.

Pre-production for the sequel begins next year with hopefully every mistake and lesson learned from 2077, going forward. Because I sure as hell hope so.
