Fighting Tips

Either I suck at Fable or I need new weapons.

I've played through Fable II nearly 5-6 times (I think). Well it always occurred to me that I think I suck at fighting. I get knocked out a lot, and with it I recieve a scar, and I really hate those.

I use flourishes all the time, guns never do any good (for me) cause I get hit before I can aim, sometimes my flourishes are interrupted, I ain't good at blocking then attacking, counters are too hard to use, and I never was a fan of magic.

What seems to be the most challenging enemy is the Commandant replica guys. Any ideas on beating them faster?

I want some GOOD tips and feedback, cause I just suck. I am maxed out in Strength and Skill, I don't bother with Will (gay). I also find the strongest weapons possible at the moment.

Re: Fighting Tips

I can bring you along in a co-op game, if you have the DLCs. I'm no god at combat but I venture to say I do alright.

Some advice though: raise your Will. I can't stress enough how vital that is. There's little that a level 5 Inferno spell won't take care of, and with careful timing and charging ahead you won't need to worry about taking damage while you charge. It's a very effective way to take out a lot of the weaker enemies and weaken the stronger ones.

I don't use Strength much, though. It's not entirely necessary. Skill will take care of the rest.

It's also definitely worth putting a lot of experience towards Dextrous Styles very early on. Rolls are a great way to get out of the way of danger, and if you realize a Balverine is charging at you it's a good way to move before you're hit. Of course you can always try pumping them full of lead, but that typically doesn't work.

Another thing is just practice. If you have the See The Future DLC, work your way through the Colosseum 10 times or so. If you don't have that, the Crucible works fine as a substitute. Both will save the effort of having to search for each different type of enemy.

As for the Commandants, they're typically a nuisance no matter what. The easiest thing to do is just charge up an Inferno spell and let that loose on the area. They'll dodge your shots, and block your flourishes. I've noticed they don't seem to be able to avoid the Inferno spell.

If you find yourself still getting hit though, look into weapons with Augment slots. The ones on Knothole Island go up to as many as four slots. Any master weapon with four slots is ideal. Look into a Ghoul Augment, a Luck and Life Augment, or any other augment that will heal you. It's a good way to make sure you're not getting knocked out, and is a perfect way to get fighting skills up without needed to worry about health.

You'll probably hate me, but "practice makes perfect". I was a pretty crappy fighter when I started, but there aren't many times when I'm having my arse beaten in a fight. Good luck to you, and I hope I've helped at least a little bit.

Re: Fighting Tips

Oh my God.

I used them so much in Fable I...

I've never used Augments in Fable II. wtf! Man, I think I am going to get one finally. Geez, I've had this game for a good while...

I reckon I'll find a life augment.

And I have no DLC's, and only a Silver XBL membership.

Thanks for helping me remember augments... Jesus....

And I never use legendary weapons, for some reason I hate them, save the Daichi. Also I rarely go for them.

Re: Fighting Tips

Ahh, if you don't have any DLCs then you'll have to go with the Ghoul Augment, and I'd grab a few master weapons with two augment slots. I'd also look into getting The Enforcer. It's the legendary blunderbuss and works quite well. Base damage of 177.0 and a reload time of 1.0 aren't half bad at all.

A Ghoul Augment should definitely solve the issue with getting knocked out a lot though.

Re: Fighting Tips

Clearly timing here is an issue if you get hit before you can shoot and your flourishes get interrupted. You don't have to aim to shoot, first of all, and second, they're guns for a reason, you shouldn't be running up in front of their faces and then pulling out your gun. Flourishes shouldn't really be a problem either seeing as enemies don't attack very often and when they do block something you have enough time to flourish. You don't have to hold x that long either, once you feel the rumbling you can release it, and holding it longer doesn't do anything. It takes literally 1 and a half seconds (not even) to charge one. None of these things should be done very close to enemies either. Flourishes use up a lot of distance and guns are ranged to begin with. You have to study the way things work and realize how much time things actually take, you don't need to stand there for 5 seconds holding a Flourish and you shouldn't be zooming in on targets that are running towards you. Zooming is for targets that haven't noticed you yet.

What other types of games do you play anyway?

Sorry for the b!tchiness of this message...I apologize

Re: Fighting Tips

I zoom in on things running at me, or that are very close to me. If you don't suck, it works fine. Of course, don't zoom if the time it takes to line up the shot is going to get you hit, but that's more common sense than actual skill in playing. Also, flourishes don't cover as much distance as you implied. You've still got to be fairly close to land a solid hit.

Another issue seems to be that he just doesn't use Will at all. I don't know about you, but it's been useful to me in countless situations. :\

Re: Fighting Tips

Well, the only thing is with flourishes is that it covers more ground than the enemies' attacks. You know how they creep up sometimes and wait until they try to hit you? That's what I was implying. And you're right, they don't cover that much ground, especially certain types, but you don't have to be right in front of their face, you can start it further back.

Magic has no use for me as I'm a Skill player and don't see much use in it. It helps if I want to lose some health. I find the Summon spell useful in crowded situations seeing as the enemies all go after them. With my Will character I have level 2 summon to distract them for some time, and during that time I cast all of my level 3, 4, and 5 level spells (if they even live that long). Inferno is quite helpful, but Lightning is better at slowing down opponents; however, Inferno does more damage. It really depends how you like to play, even though there's not too much variety in how to do things.

And with the gun zooming, that's where I meant when I said timing is an issue. There's no need to sit there and and make sure you have a good shot because it's going to land, you don't even need zoom to make them stagger back, but it just does more damage. And rolling is very helpful as you said, it's actually my best friend. Blocking just doesn't cut it.

I honestly think the problem lies in the fact that they don't play these types of games or games in general. This particular game is very easy to fight in.

Although, thinking about it, I'm do very poorly in FPS's like Modern Warfare for the most part...but am very good with games like Fable and Oblivion

Re: Fighting Tips

Right, haven't read above posts (sorry I'm in a rush) but I can give some tips for all three fighting styles.

Strength

Flourishes are the way to go early in the game, and they remain very useful all the way throughout, but if you get to higher levels and are good at timing, counters are 1 hit kill, and chain attacks are useful too.

I recommend rolling to avoid enemies, then rolling behind them and attacking with chain attacks.

Skill

All about the rolling here. Roll to avoid, or snipe far away from the combat or you'll get hit. Spamming the Y button is also useful to get shots out quickly.

Will

Spells like Time Control and Raise Dead can prove useful when charging up big attacks. If it's just one enemy, spamming a level 1 shock can be really good, as they can't attack.

Re: Fighting Tips

Well I got a wee bit better.

I trained my Blades Skill all the way up. It helps a lot, my new Ghoul Augment works ok I guess, and my new gun can now kill people in 1-3 hits.

I have a Master Longsword with an Augment Slot, and I have a Master Flintlock Pistol with no augment.

They work well in the Crucible.

Sadly, I can't kill the Troll in time whilst at the Crucible. I can get 7/8 perfect rounds, but that troll just won't till like 2 minutes, and I need 1:50.

Re: Fighting Tips

One word: Augments. Ghoul/health augment is a must for me every time I play Fable, I'm addicted to it. Makes it almost impossible to die.

Re: Fighting Tips

Any tips on defeating the Crucible Troll?

I mean, I can get him down about in 2 minutes 10 sec, but I need 1 minute 50 sec.

Re: Fighting Tips

Lots of people say the Blades spell works very well. Of course, you'll need to charge it up, and that takes time you sometimes don't get when it's lobbing rocks at you. Your best bet is to probably develop your Will Abilities fully so that the higher level spells charge faster.

Also, Time Control does not work in The Crucible, so that's essentially wasting precious time.

The method I used, though, was Skill. The Enforcer takes out a nerve tendril in one hit easily, and if you're lucky it'll hit two. It also reloads pretty quickly so you won't need to worry about accidentally shooting a Hobbe instead. Just keep running around in circles picking them off and it won't be an issue. It goes down pretty fast.

I see what you were saying now. And yeah, I tend to do better with Fable and Oblivion than most FPS games. Wasn't too bad at Halo though, but then again I've always loved the game and that gave me a purpose to not suck. XD

And yeah, there aren't many options as far as spicing up your combat style. They keep getting simpler and simpler with it to appeal to the "newer, more casual players". Would have been interesting if there was a difficulty setting put on Fable similar to the one used in Oblivion, or even just the option to toggle on/off the auto-aiming in Fable. Something to give veteran players more of a challenge once the combat becomes horribly dry.

But meh, whatever. Suppose we can always see how many foes we can kill before taking a single hit. XD

Re: Fighting Tips

spamming attacks does not get you very far with this game, even on my first play through i never got knocked out, the key to combat in balance between ranged and melee. Staying in one spot is a sure fire way to get killed, don't focus on one enemy at a time if you surrounded take pot shots at any guys that come close and spam Y ( if on x box ) with a pistol to do extra damage when enemy's get knocked down, only flourish when there is no one behind you, oh and practice makes perfect, the crucible is an excellent way to not only get XP but to hone your combat.

Re: Fighting Tips

Spamming attacks is actually the easiest way possible, I don't know who's staying in one spot while shooting people close to them. That's what rolling is for the last time I checked.

Howdy , sorry to bury up this dead post whole 8 years later:ermm:
BUT there is one essential trick that nobody here ever seemed to mention, even if you want to fully avoid will powers, you should atleast invest one single rank in the time spell !

Since like even one of the loading screen tips clearly tells us : the aimed function of the time bending spell will trigger a short range teleportation placing you right behind your target enemy ( or the closest one) allowing you to deal surprising devastating blows and flourishes !

Best is you do not need to charge it ! Just quickly smash B while aiming(walking) to target position and your player will rush / teleport few meters.

Especially useful to dodge all attacks (even trolls) or get quickly into or out of the battle  even getting distance for range attacks^_^

Well I'd suggest to train this tactic on weaker bandits, it can need proper timing.

One of the main reasons I love that function is it reminds me of the "assassin's rush" from fable 1

To those having trouble with the Crucible troll, invest in a master blunderbuss. Preferably a four augment version from Knothole Island ️ if possible.

Then acquire ar least three augments that boost your gun`s stopping power. (I reserve the final slot for a money augment, but that's just me )

Then when you're ready, do the Crucible until you face the troll your augmented weapon will kill Hobbes in a single shot, and destroying Trolly`s nerve tendrils will be much easier. Just remember to roll constantly and use the rocks as cover against the trolls attacks.

BONUS TIP: When using magic against Hobbes, use the Force Push spell. Unlike Inferno, it will kill the stilt sniper Hobbes as well.
