Variety of Combat

Hello Everyone.

Let me just begin with a friendly warning. I am on a media black out. I do this with most games I'm interested in, and have for almost two years now. I'll read a preview now and then, but I've found I enjoy my gaming more when I don't follow things like gameplay videos and developer diaries.

Keeping that in mind, please don't go into massive detail when answering any of my questions :) Thank you.

(Ironically, Fable 1 is most one of the reasons I do media blackouts >.< heh)

I've always liked Fable, but see it as more of an action game with customisation elements. What gripes me is the lack of variety in combat :/ it's strange that a game so focused on character growth gives you so little to work with.

I mean melee specifically, though Will and Skill could certainly use some work. It seems there is only two types of weapons. Little and Big. Regardless of whether it is bladed or blunt, you're either swishing a sword like Jack Sparrow, or heaving about an axe or hammer.

I was hoping that this would change in Fable 2, but was wrong. Since I'll be spending half of Fable 3 fighting (and the other half shopping and working real estate, most likely) the combat is going to be a big thing for me, and if it stays with the 'Little and Big' I'm going to be majorly disappointed :/

Im not expecting anything unrealistic here. A few different weapon types is all they would need to sell me. We've had short swords and heavy weapons, but what about sweeping combat staves for those of us that want to try a Pure Will character? What about Twin Daggers for the fast ranged character? Bladed Staves, Twin Short Swords... this is just the simple stuff. If I listed every weapon type I'd like to use in a Fable game, it would be pretty unrealistic.

Sure, I'd like to have a shirtless, stocky Will User with bladed Gauntlets and Boot's who practices Eastern Martial Art's, but I know developing a game is tough work, and honestly, I'd be happy with just two or three new weapon types.

I don't want to go trawling through previews and watching videos to see if there are any plans for this. I did catch a glimpse at the video with the wolves chasing the girl, and it worried me, to be honest. It looked identical to Fable 2, with no HUD and a little more polish with the animations.

That's not a bad thing, quite the opposite. But I wants meh a Staff, dammit!

Re: Variety of Combat

Since I respect you're request not to go in tiny details:
Peter Molyneux told us that you will start with a weapon, based on your gamerscore. (high gamer score doesn't make it stronger. just so you know). With a lot of different gamer scores, there will be a lot of different 'base' weapons.
From there on, the weapon will change, according to you're fighting style (of which I will give No examples, just for you. ;) )

From what I've seen, there will definitely be more different weapons in Fable 3, but I can't confirm the staff, yet.

Re: Variety of Combat

As long as there is something different, I'll be happy. I'm sick to death of light swords and heavy axes. But that Gamerscore evolving your weapon? ...that sounds a bit typical and gimmicky of Molyneaux :/ I wouldn't mind hearing more about that, just so I understand.

My current Gamerscore is 21155. Not the biggest in the world, but by no means small (haven't we all had to say the same before? xD)

Re: Variety of Combat

i was reading an artical that said it would be fable gamerscore not your whole gamerscore but this was from a mag that can get things wrong from time to time it will be interesting to find out. I think it would be better this way as some people might not have as much time for games persay and direct there attension onto a couple of games that they like and enjoy and so cant pump their gamerscores as high as some people it will be inetersting to see.

Re: Variety of Combat

if you wanna get up to date go read a wikipedia article or something. we're here posting fable related news all the time so it's a little unfair to be asked to summarize all of it just because you haven't been up to date and/or are too lazy to go back and read it yourself.
here's a solid answer for you:
go to www.projectego.net
and start reading everything under the fable 3 news column

Oh yes, it's very lazy of me not to follow the pre-release hype. How dare I have curiosities of one thing in particular.

Ya know, some of us choose to be selective about the preview info we read up on, and I hardly think it's polite for a Moderator to criticise that choice so rudely :/

Edit: I apologise, I misread Modder as Moderator. Still, it doesn't excuse.

Modders are NOT Moderators

Also lighten up Cheez, some people try not to look at much game news before a games release so they dont get hyped up.

Re: Variety of Combat

Heh, realised that a second too late ^^ Sorry.

And to clarify for you Cheez... I was not asking you to summarise all of the Fable 3 info :/ I'm honestly confused how you even managed to come to that. All I was asking was if Fable 3 would have more weapon types.

It was a simple question.

Re: Variety of Combat

If they made as many weapons as possible this game couldnt be topped. Especially with this new weapon customization I would like my own unique killing device not the same bloody sword every melee fighter has. If there are like 10 good weapons that entire part of the game would be a disappointment.

Re: Variety of Combat

Sabbat, I'm with you - I avoid hype like the plague for games I actually want to enjoy upon release ;)

A staff would be pretty cool though...I like to zap :D

Re: Variety of Combat

it'd be for melee too :) wide, flashy sweeping attacks for getting breathing space or tripping up bandits to come too close.

And it's not even about the cool points, it would make a massive difference to the game on a cosmetic level. Fable was always intended to let you have a unique character, but in both games, your the same multi-tasker as everyone else, with a different shirt and hat and beard :/

Allowing a weapon type that is symbolic of each three disciplines would help majorly in setting yourself out. Double Dagger's for Skill, Staff's for Will, Greatswords and Kicks for Strength (in addition to regular weapon kinds of course)

I don't wanna be the fast archer/marksman that carries around a sword and uses it like a warrior does :/ just makes me feel like too much of a warrior and not enough of a quick stepping thief. Having two lightning fast daggers in their sheaths at my sides would make me feel like I'm actually specialising.

I guess that's a big part of my annoyance here... Fable 2 is awful for specialisation characters :/
