Okay, first of all, please don't shoot me :L. I've been quite tempted for a while now to give World of Warcraft a try, because i've heard a ton of good things about it, but I could do with some advice first.

There are a few things putting me off:

1. The subscription. I've never played a subscription-based game, and to be honest, I don't much like the thought of having to continually pay to be able to play it.
2. The addiction factor. From what i've heard, the game is SUPER addictive, and although i'm off school for Summer now, I don't want to become a hermit through playing this game :L.

The thing that's enticing me though is a deal I saw on the Game website; it was offering something called the World of Warcraft Battlechest (which includes WoW, the WoW Strategy Guide, The Burning Crusade Expansion Pack, and The Burning Crusade Strategy Guide) for £7.99, and because I have a bunch of Game Reward Points saved up, I can get all of it for £4.50. Seems like a pretty good deal to me.

I've played MMORPGs before, I used to be pretty addicted to Runescape and am a semi-frequent Lord of the Rings Online player, so I have a slight idea of what i'm in for if I decide to go ahead and get it. I'm also in the middle of downloading the Starter Edition, so I can try it out before making a decision.

So, any suggestions? Does anyone here play it, and if so, what do you think? Thanks! :)

It is not really addictive moreso than the end-game of it controls your life. I've played it, and from the start to the time you hit max level it is a bucket of fun. However, the end-game requires like forty or something people all getting together and doing stuff to advance. There are people who live by their WoW schedule.

That's crazy! :L I just can't decide whether or not to buy it, the main thing that's putting me off is really the subscription thing. I mean, it's something like £8.99 a month, right? Although I heard you can buy these time card things that give you a certain amount of days to play or something, which mightn't be so bad.

Never played it.
All through high school my friends played the crap outta that game and practically begged me to play it with them.
Never liked the look of it let alone all the hot keys/short cuts cluttering up the screen, looked like work

Before coughing up for a copy of the game and investing in subscription fees and the like, why not download and try out the free-to-play Starter Edition which will allow you to access to the complete game for as long as it takes you to reach level 20. The Starter Edition should provide you with ample time to help you decide whether or not WoW is for you.

Alternatively, there's also a handful of other MMORPGs available to sample on Steam, if you fancied having a quick perusal.

Yeah, I mentioned in the first post that I had the starter downloading, and i'm just after playing it for a couple of hours :L.

So far, I really like it. It reminds me a LOT of Lotro, which is a good thing. My only problem is the framerates; it was playing at 3fps. 3! It was so slow that I ended up turning it off a few minutes ago. Occasionally, it would go up, I think it was 12 at its highest, which was great, but otherwise it was too slow to play comfortably. I'm not sure whether or not that would change if I bought the full game and installed it from the disc and stuff.

Also, i'm playing as a Rogue Blood Elf, and I like it :p.

[UPDATE]

I just checked, and I found out that it hasn't finished downloading yet. It's got about 3.9gb to go, so that could be the reason for the slow gameplay. There's a little bar that has SETUP, AVAILABLE, PLAYABLE, and it's currently on Available, so i'm assuming that just means that i'm able to play it, but it's not quite done cooking yet :L.

The don't have 40 player raids anymore. Most is 25 man, and most people just stick to 10 man raids. Its also become a very easy and casual game in comparison to previous expansions. And they now nerf every single thing that people whine about being too hard. But you played the game when it first came out right?

But try it out for sure. Its become a pretty easy game to play. But the all the content in the battlechest is pretty much obsolete. You'll just be using it for leveling, basically.

And no Idea on the framerates you're getting. The game shouldn't be that low even if you have a fairly old computer. Maybe search around the WoW forums.

I wasnt aware of this but its a good idea to give you time to get a feel for the game.

When I played Horde was Horde and Alliance was Alliance. Shamans were Horde-only and Paladins were Alliance only.

Basically, if you can get a group/clan to play with, it's worth it. Otherwise, I wouldn't.

Thats the main thing that puts me off most MMO games and the reason I liked Guild Wars so much.

GW 2 coming out in August by the way. Hopefully it can redeem the MMO genre.

This happens to every old MMO. If they didn't make low level easymode, new players would be put off by it very soon (because they would essentially have to catch up with 5+ years of game time).

This means endgame is mostly gear farm and OEing skills/items - better items = more powerful char = less skill involved. If you have a group and the game has good politics and PvP system, it's still all good. If those fail, the game basically becomes a boring solo grind.

Well, i've been playing the Starter Edition for most of the day, and I liked it so much that I bought the Battlechest and a 60 day time card online a few hours ago :L.

I think i'm level 9 at the minute, i'm doing some quest where I need to find party supplies. Another thing that influenced me to buy it was the fact that it was Mac compatible. I posted a thread a few weeks ago where I mentioned that i'm planning on getting an iMac in a few months, so i'll be able to install it there too without having to buy a separate disc, which is nice :).

They should have really kept it like that. Was unique. Yeah, you definitely played the game when it was "dedicate your life or you won't be good".

Well, this post caught my eyes, due to the fact I just recently bought WoW. Lol. I haven't played WoW since 2005. I heard a lot has changed, but getting back into it, I didn't want to spend close to $100 USD to feel left behind in the game; However, this week (at least in North America), Blizzard has WoW on sale. I bought World of WarCraft, Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, and Cataclysm altogether for $30 USD and it comes with one month free subscription.

So far, the only let down I have is that on the server I'm currently playing on, there's very few non-80s. So I'm usually playing alone or playing with my wife and rarely spot other players in the starting areas, or in the zones meant for 30s and below.

Other than that, WoW is still fun and addicting as I remember. If you are going to end up purchasing the game, I'd suggest joining a Guild in-order to at least kill the solo'ing you'll most likely be doing at low levels (it could just be my server, though, that's like this).

Anyway, I play on Heallscream, U.S.
