President of Microsoft’s interactive entertainment division, Don Mattrick will be revealing some details about the much rumoured new Xbox console in Redmond, Washington on May 21st. However dont expect a huge amount of details on the console specs themselves....

Please don't let it be called 720.... 360 was lame enough a name.

Just give me backward compatibility! I need it!

As a side note, I really wish this wasn't happening. I don't need to be spending more money on a new console. The 360 is still perfectly good.

No, the consoles have fallen far behind what PCs are capable of. It's been ~10 years. We need a new generation.

While that might be true, I still think the current generation is fine. Real improvement in games doesn't come with a more powerful console that has amazing graphics. Real improvements come in the form of things like innovative gameplay features and brilliant story writing, which you don't need a new console for.

The Xbox is currently using DVD technology that is completely obsolete. Developers are struggling with disc size constraints and the 360 cannot be updated for a new disc format (as it was designed to eventually run HDDVD, but the format was scrapped.)

Again, we need a new generation.

But what kind of practical effect would a new disc format have?

But what kind of practical effect would a new disc format have?

Developers wouldn't have to pick and choose what went into their games. The Xbox is outdated to the point that you simply can't fit all of your wanted content onto a single DVD, and devs dread adding a second disc.

And, maybe graphics aren't terribly important to you, but they are to me. I for one look forward to the day where characters can animate and emote with hyper-realism. Immersion is important to me.

As are high-resolution textures, but that's another topic all together. :D

I would have to agree with Tyloric for the reasons he stated too, DVD format as gaming media is dead & we are getting content cut from games because of it. I agree with Necro about graphics not being the be all & end all of a game and we need more innovative games & features but when developers are struggling to fit their games on discs it can be a pain to develop something to its full potential.

Still baffles me how some companies like Bethesda can fit Skyrim on 1 disc then some games end up on multiple that arent even half the size of it.

Sure, although I have it on good authority from my PC savvy friends that the PS4 specs are already below the top tier gaming PC of today. Read it in a couple articles too.

There seems to be a consensus that next-gen consoles will have to attract a superior development market to maintain an advantage over the PC as the hardware just isn't there. If that is the case, I'm really really disinterested by the idea of forking out £500+ for a casual games machine.

Consoles will always be behind PC's specs wise but numbers etc only count for so much as consoles can still pull off some better than on paper graphics with those specs. Most developers will always opt for multiple platform or console games as that is where the money is, though more companies are starting to show faith in PC gaming once again. Those that are pushing the boundaries with tech in games usually opt for PC as lead platform.

this generation is gonna mark my transition to PC gaming, i think. always been a console man but my financial situation being what it is means i can probably only get a PC or a console, and having a PC will come in more useful. saying that I'll probably end up getting a next gen xbox in a couple years, more than anything just to keep up with the inevitable console exclusives

If I had the spare cash I would definitely get back into PC gaming, I mean I have more friends who play online on consoles but I cant remember the last time I played online with them on Live. PC games are generally cheaper, have mods & look much prettier. I do game a lot on my 360 however & prefer to sit on the bed to game with big TV & use console to watch decent amount of TV & things on Lovefilm so its becoming more of an all round entertainment center for me.

The console market still remains the majority market. The PC market is actually only where 15% of revenue is generated for most developers (excluding PC exclusives, naturally).

High capabilities and fancy new numbers usually don't mean anything when coming to the size, content, and visualization of games. If you are looking for that sort of stuff always go PC it will never be inferior it is raw. I'm excited for something new to play with. I want to be playing Destiny on a new console. I'm hoping this new generation will be that centerpiece of the living room I've been asking for.

The name itself of the console could possibly destroy my liking of it though. Just simply 'Xbox' would be cool.

I also heard a rumor that the presentation will also be aired on Spike Tv.

The reveal is at 6pm GMT tonight, so convert that to your respective timezone. Just letting you guys know.

You might want to try to get on as early as you can. The PS4 reveal show had some serious traffic so it was difficult getting on the site.

EDIT: You can also watch it on Xbox live.
