After all the madness of the last few days and many cities being destroyed and burned in mindless acts of violence just wondered if any members here lived in any of the areas affected. I know Hermit is from Liverpool and that had been effected just curious which (if any) members here had seen any of it or been effected by it. News has been broadcast around the world so im guessing most people have seen what has been going on by now but if not...

BBC News UK Riots

Live UK Riot Feed

Main areas affected ive heard are:

London
Manchester
Birmingham
Liverpool
Salford
Nottingham
Wolverhampton
West Bromwich

With reports of disturbances in other smaller areas too.

I've been affected by it. I saw people talk about it but I didn't know what was going on. It annoyed the hell out of me. Then I found out there were some rioting people doing... rioting? Oh well.

Originally they started in Tottenham (London) because a guy that shot a police man got shot and killed in return. Now a bunch of pikey pricks are roaming the streets, smashing shops and stealing loads of ****.

I have no riots where I live but I heard last night 19 people got arrested in Bristol. That's probably as close as it'll get to me however.

Read elsewhere that the riots are stemmed from the police killing a man who never fired his gun, then shooting their own car radio to make the suspect (Mark Duggan) look as if he tried to fire the first shot. After they investigated further, it revealed that the bullet (a jacketed round, which is a police issued bullet) in the car radio came from the guns the police use. Cover ups leading to a mistrust between the community and the authorities, and thus: riots.

Creo que todo esto podría resolverse con un simpático juego de productos de fútbol y la leche. Y la destrucción de los gatos. Odio a los gatos.

That's interesting, didn't know that. That would make alot more sense - the majority of the rioters are teenagers that feel ostracized by the rest of society. Still, there's one thing to riot for a cause and another thing entirely to loot to get a bag of rice.

True, though some people like to take advantage of a situation and join in on the fun. Idiots.

It's a shame, these are supposedly the biggest riots in 30 years, rivaling some of the ones in the 80s that dealt with serious issues. I remember the student riots not long ago that were hijacked by anarchists - they just grew and grew and I bet towards the end if you pulled out any single rioter from then they'd be more likely to tell you they had no idea why they were rioting than to explain the original protests.

Yeah it started in Tottenham when the mans family and friends were protesting (peacefully) outside a police station wanting answers over his death. Then according to some people a random person threw a brick through the window then it escalated from there. That swept through London and then other cities heard of the riots and opportunist idiots decided to do the same thing elsewhere. However this was for the sole purpose of causing chaos, damage, and thieving items that they can sell.

I bet 90% of the people involved over the country dont know the reason it started.

Wow that actually makes sense because after reading that article I was thinking "but WHY are they rioting and causing massive violence?"
Hopefully all our UK members live in safe parts of their towns. Rioting is one thing; using it as a crime cover is another. If their breaking into stores and setting up bombs like it's armageddon what's to stop them from breaking into apartments and houses nearby if they haven't already?

This shooting and rioting situation reminds me of the Oscar Grant situation in Oakland. He was a black guy that was shot and killed by BART police (BART is like a subway system for the SF Bay Area) when he was face down on the ground. You can see it in a video here (the shot at the end can be shocking, may not be for everyone). It resulted in stuff like this and this, especially when the cop only got an involuntary manslaughter conviction.

Where's a healthy dose of police brutality when you need it?

To quell the riots that is, a shame if it turns out to be true that man died for nothing.

Yeah, and what makes this even sadder is that folks who are attempting to protect their communities from these moronic rioters are getting killed in the process. Yesterday an older man was shot and killed while trying to fend off the rioters, and just today 3 Asians were mowed down by a vehicle while also trying to protect their communities.. all 4 of these people died after arriving at the hospital.

For anyone that's interested, here's an interesting viewpoint of the reasons why the rioters are doing so, only takes a couple minutes and even if you don't agree with it, it's quite interesting.

A few residential places have been burnt down, although they seem to be attached to corporate facilities, I know a large block of flats over a furniture store burnt down.

Jesus... Hopefully things clear up soon... Given what's going on, normality seems like it'll take a little while to resume though.

They have burned houses, peoples warehouses and cars causing millions of pounds worth of damage. Was a photo on the news of a woman having to leap from her apartment and be caught by firefighters. These vandals have no regard for what they are doing and are merely doing it because they know they wont be punished badly as some 16 year old chav scumbag said on the radio earlier. They think its some funny game going around smashing up these buildings and setting fires. What they fail to realise is that some people have spent many years building up these businesses and the only living they can earn come from these buildings.

There was one building that had survived 2 world wars and not been touched and been in this mans family for generations. This was the respect the yobs showed that building...

Then there was the Sony Distribution center in Enfield...

Yeah was also a clip on the news last night of what looked like some guys helping a wounded man up from the ground. He was dazed and confused and had clearly been beaten quite badly, however after they picked him off the ground and seemed to check if he was ok they robbed the contents of his bag and left him there.

Jesus... Hopefully things clear up soon... Given what's going on, normality seems like it'll take a little while to resume though.

Paints a really good image for the UK before the 2012 Olympics doesnt it... as well as a 'Friendly' International game of football being called off between England and Holland tonight and it could delay the start of the english Premier League season.
