As I mentioned in my Halloween thread I often watch a whole bunch of horror movies to get in the spirit of the season, was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for some horror movies?? I've seen a whole boatload and most of the classics so possibly looking for more obscure ones, and foregin horror is okk too doesn't have to be American.

Also if you have an all time favorite I'd like to hear some discussion on that. Mine is the original 1984 A Nightmare on Elm Street, just because growing up (and yes even as an adult :/) it always scared me and even invaded my dreams from time to time haha.

Carpenter's "The Thing"

A very chilling movie with some very awesome special effects, none of which is CGI; all about rubber flesh and slime. One of my all-time favorite movies. Highly recommend it. If you do get hit by a snowstorm, that would set the mood perfectly.

Drag Me To Hell had only two things going for it;

The killer goat
and
The old lady's head explodes and her eyes shot across the screen in failtacular CGI.

Also, I can't forgive a movie for killing a fluffy kitten! :(

The Thing is a fantastic film, both the original and the 80s remake. All that slimey over-the-top gore from the 80s was always one of those things that made it special for me, and as such.. I got a couple of movies to recommend with just that.

If you haven't seen them yet, Re-Animator and From Beyond are two excellent pieces I greatly recommend. It's a shame Jeffrey Combs didn't get as many roles as Bruce Campbell, he was clearly in the same league as Bruce.

Nothing like some HP Lovecraft to spice up your Halloween.

Whilst good movies, they aren't very Lovecraftian beyond the character names and premise. Lovecraft doesn't translate well into film.

Anyway, here is a Swedish horror flick for ya; Evil Ed. It's about a film cutter who goes insane from years of having to review and decide what to cut from over the top horror movies. Gory as hell it pays homage lots of awesome stuff, especially the Evil Dead series.

This past week they have been showing the original Halloween movies on AMC, and i've been really getting into them. Not really on the scary side, maybe you'll jump a few times, but it has a great storyline. With the exception of Halloween III I'd recommend checking them out.

Michael Myers will always be one of my favorite Halloween slasher killers, even his theme song is pure badassery.

Hallween III is much better than all the following sequels until H20. The cult origin story is just utterly retarded and ruins the character of Michael. And the little girl murdering her stepmother? They just forget about it in the next movie. Up until H20 the series is a mess.

I dunno, I saw Halloween III but it just did not entertain me. Yea at first I didnt understand H20 until I saw it again the next night. For some reason AMC didnt show Halloween II, so thats what kept me behind in the story. 4 and 5 were not too bad, they did pick up right at the end of 2, but H20 pretty much sealed the story where 5 left many questions.

I'd recommend seeing Halloween III again. When they made it the idea was that they were going to make each Halloween movie have a different halloween-themed story; the Michael story was just supposed to be one of many. But the Michael character proved too popular so instead of thinking up something new they made two incoherent and stupid sequels to cash in on Michael.

Halloween III is a great movie to watch on Halloween; you just have to forget all about Michael and judge it with an open mind.

Well, I plan on going out and finding the Halloween movies sometime this week, so if I find 3 the i'll pick it up. True, unfortunately Michael Myers fell to the cash cows.

It would have been better if they had made it a trilogy, which you can have if you just take 1, 2, H20, and leave 4 and 5 behind. Then they could have continued with III being Season of The Witch and continuing with any other stories they most likely had at the time.

I was always confused by Halloween 3, but didn't know they had planned to do a different theme for each one afterwards. The Michael Myers story did get a bit ridiculous from 4 and on though.

Yes The Thing is a classic!! I always liked the 70s-90s Horror movies soo much better, the CGI in many horror movies today really kills the vibe for me. Not scary at all, I prefer the older real effects and gore by alot.

There are a few in the suggestions I haven't seen though, so I'll have to check them out.

It just gets more authentic when there is something in front of the camera. Something about how the shadows and lights fall upon the object when it moves. No matter how advanced the CGI technology is, you can still tell what is obvious CGI because it looks out of place. Take a look at the xenomorphs in the Alien series;

A guy in a rubber suit that is covered in sexual lubricant(!) makes one of my most dreaded childhood haunts.

...don't take that the wrong way, I meant the above alien, nothing else....

Drag Me to Hell was great. I love that movie, makes me lol every time.

It's hard to talk about foreign horror or classic horror without bringing up Hausu.

Usually I tend to go for the B-horror movies and just really bad ones. Netflix is a good resource of these. They're hilarious, and every once in a while you'll get a glimpse of awesome movie making before it reverts back to being laughably bad. Just a few are 5ive Girls, Night of the Demons (remake), Demonic Toys, and A Brush With Death (so bad I couldn't even finish it).

I enjoy B-horror as well, unfortunately I cancelled my netflix when they raised their price though.

I'd say that's a shame, but also guilty. Plenty of B-horror out there and it's a great way to just have a list since they're mostly obscure by nature. :(

I've been deprived of B horror for too long. Trying to convince my roommate to get it so I can just run his account on my Wii and watch some.

Let the right one in, a very cool new vamp flick. Haven't seen the american one 'let me in'.... but I don't need to... it's a ****ty american remake no doubt.

Trick R Treat is pretty cool too, its based off a comic. Try cube its alot like saw but better.

And of course the scariest film of ALL time!

Anybody remember this old gem of a film? Decided to watch it again a couple weeks ago and almost forgot how awesome it was.

Yet another underrated actor that is Jeff Goldblum, I'm curious if they still make any horror films today that doesn't resort to flashy CGI effects, but instead hand-crafted special effects. Has anyone seen any? Maybe some indie or foreign films buried beneath all the mainstream?
