Really? That's like... an essay-length department. Is a "Department" anything like it is for us? At the federal level they're cabinet posts, very high-ranking executive branch.
For us that'd be... Department of the Interior. Mostly. We don't have a Department of Arts, Sports, and Tourism. Commerce might do a bit of tourism, I guess...
Oh, and I was asking because it was mentioned in the Wikipedia on the Jervis Bay Territory. Which I was reading... just for the hell of it. Seems like an odd mix of stuff and a very long name.
I'm assuming you mean that a cabinet member gets given an area of responsibility after an election. I don't know if we have a name for the governing body itself, but the guys who's respinsibility it is are called ministers.
No, it's different. The cabinet-level departments (there's something like... 12 of them? I dunno. Exist, and have for quite awhile. When a new president is elected, they choose their cabinet, somebody for each post, and then Congress (I don't remember which house, or both) confirms them.
Department of the Interior, Department of State, Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, etc. They're always that and just that, and different people get the job of Secretary of X.
So, yeah, I think it's the same job but a completely different way of filling it. And defining it.
Yeah, ours is a lot more fluid. The Prime Minister can make up portfolios, merge some, get rid of others, etc, and it's way less of a formal thing, because the only people that have to agree with it are the party members.
You should watch the movie Hawke. I think you'd like it. It's a dramatisation about the most popular Australian Prime Minister ever, Bob Hawke. It's actually done really well for an Australian drama, which are usually ****.
