New Xbox Rumours Gain Momentum
Industry expects big announcement at impending CES.

UK, January 3, 2008 - Microsoft's head honcho Bill Gates is due to make his final keynote speech at next week's Consumer Electronics Show, and many are speculating he is to go out with a bang with the announcement of a new flavour for the Xbox 360.

The murmurings began with a column by Brier Dudley in The Seattle Times, a source close to Microsoft, in which some educated guesswork about the contents of Gates' swansong was aired. These ranged from the fairly pedestrian – a focused convergence between the Xbox Live, Zune and Media Center teams to offer a one-stop service for content – to the more bravado anticipation of a new variety of Xbox 360, adding to the various choices already available. Dudley outlined the possibility of Microsoft licensing out their technology to a third party "…to develop a digital video recorder with a hard-drive, high-definition HD-DVD drive and Xbox gaming capabilities."

Already the rumour has snowballed, with Stuff Magazine going as far to outline specifications of the new Xbox, alongside a speculative street date of Autumn 2008 and the moniker of Xbox Ultimate. Among the features they expect to see are the aforementioned HD-DVD drive, built-in Wi-Fi, a more muted fan and a 320GB hard disk that would enable users to fully benefit from the Xbox IPTV service.

Unsurprisingly, Microsoft UK were not willing to offer comment on the growing speculation, but rest assured all will become clear when Gates delivers his speech this Sunday.

Microsoft have denied the rumours.

There's promise of "important" Xbox news from Bill Gates' appearance ar next week's CES in Las Vegas, but despite the rumours it looks like a HD-DVD enabled Xbox 360 won't be revealed at the Sin City electronics show.

Taking a sharp detour from its "we don't comment on rumours" policy, one Microsoft spokesperson said, "we have reiterated multiple times since launching the Xbox 360 HD-DVD Player that we have no plans to integrate an HD-DVD player in to the Xbox 360," in an interview with Gamespot.

"We feel that offering the drive externally is the best way to give consumers the ultimate choice to create their own high-definition experiences."

It's a bit confusing then exactly what Bill's going to reveal in tomorrow's speech, though if it does turn out to be nothing to do with HD-DVD it'll probably save Microsoft some embarrassment following Warner Brother's defect ro Blu-Ray.

We're currently feeling rather unhealthy in the Las Vegas convention center, so we'll let you know what Gates has to say as it happens tomorrow.

Heh, CVG sounds rather disappointed that they won't be getting any good scoops on it. :lol:

An external HD-DVD Drive would be alot more smarter anyway, if they resleased a new Xbox 360 with built-in HD-DVD drive, Wi-Fi, and a 320GB HDD, that would just be a total slap in the face of all those who already have purchased the Xbox 360 Elite.
