Alice and Wonderland fanfiction.

I was wondering, how do people get so many interpretations and new ideas out of Alice in Wonderland? (I.e Alice is Dead, Alice, etc)

I haven't read the book in ages, and never read the sequels, are these fan versions just pulled out of their ass or can they be connected as new perceptions on the story?
