If you haven't seen American Beauty then do it.

A few weeks ago I watched American Beauty with my roommate and a friend. They'd never seen it so I thought why not.

Afterward we got into a huge discussion about whether or not it was "****ed up" of the main character played by Spacey to lust after his daughter's best friend.
In the context of the story I don't think you end up hating the guy but at the end of the day that one part of his character always left a sour taste in my mouth.

The friend who was there didn't think it was messed up at all that he was fourty-something and she was a teenager because she was eighteen. Doesn't matter that he's an authority figure or anything. Personally I just think the movie made him like the guy too much to admit anything.

What do you think?
PS try to keep the pedobear jokes to a minimum.
 
No matter what, We're still going to be attracted to girls around 18-20 years of age, even when we are 40 or so.. I dont see the problem with that.

Yeah I've seen that movie, it wasen't thaaaat "F*cked up", Just a bit different..
 
For the record her age isn't confirmed. He's 42 and she's a high schooler of unspecified age.
Lusting after is well and good. I'm sure it's not uncommon. What's at issue here is that he started acting out trying to impress her, despite the psychological effect it had on his daughter, and was inches away from taking her virginity. The fact that he's an authority figure just makes it worse. I'm sure this sort of thing has been on Jerry Springer at some point.

Maybe this is just where myself and most differ, but I take issue with it.

Well if I read the plot synopsis off Wikipedia correctly I am to believe that you can actually see the fantasies he has about her. If she has nude or near nude scenes, they couldn't have that in the movie if she was under 18 or it'd be classed as kiddie porn, so isn't it safe to assume that she's at least 18...?

The actress must be over 18 for on-screen nudity but her character in the context of the story can be any age.

I thought it was a really good movie.

Messed up things? Sure.

But these things happen. What we get to see is the Hollywood version of it, and while it's creepy to witness, it's creepier to know that it actually happens. I was a little sad at the end when he dies, because he's just a poor depressed man that makes all the mistakes and ends up dying for it.

Honestly, if some middle-aged man or even one of my father's buddies started hitting on and expressing lustful desires for my high school attending daughter, I'd be pretty disturbed. I find there to be too much of an imbalance in maturity and power for such a relationship to work out properly, and the adult resorting to immature to downright disturbing antics to get her attention only makes it that much worse. Last thing the father of said child needs and wants to see is his own teenage daughter getting prematurely knocked-up, because the other guy was careless in his actions.

Honestly? I'm on this website, (that I refuse to share the name of for fear of me being found on it and blackmailed) It's a social network, that's QUITE dirty. I see TONS of 40-50 year old MEN AND WOMEN who are dating 18-20 year olds. It's no news to me. Sexuality knows no age.
