Up your sneak levels...and make use of the landscape (trees, rocks etc) so you have somewhere to hide when they walk past you. At some point they are bound to see you but hopefully by then you'll have a chance to rocket past them through the open doors.
Been a long time since I played the first Fable though, so my advice could suck massively.

Just kill them all (even if the gates close) and go outside the gates, there should be a giant rock to your left, hide behind it until the gates re-open and then when the guards go out run back around the rock and through the door!
