So, here's the thing. I don't really watch baseball, but right now the Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles are BOTH in the playoffs.

This is incredible. DC was last in the playoffs in the 30s, when the Washington Senators were "first in war, first in peace, and last in the American League." They sucked consistently for decades, then got moved. The Expos were moved here in the 2000s or so, and now, for the first time in more than 70 years, they've got a chance. Just beat the Cardinals in game 1 of their 5-game series for the National League Division Series.

The O's haven't been in the playoffs much, but haven't sucked as hard as DC teams. They last saw the playoffs in 1997, and they're "my team," with the caveat that I haven't watched them (or any baseball) in years. They're in rain delay before the first game of their series with the Yankees. And the Yankees are the Great Satan of the MLB. (Plus, waaaay too many Yankees fans go to U of Maryland with me)

So, basically, this postseason is carefully calculated to make me start watching baseball.

Anybody else feel good about this postseason? Anything exciting happening for you?

(PS: In case this isn't already known, I live in Maryland not far from DC. So DC teams and Baltimore teams are both my quote-unquote hometown teams. Baltimore O's for baseball and Washington Redskins for football are the ones I'm really likely to root for.)

It irritates me how many Phillies fans there are here/come down here. When they play the Nationals it's like, holy ****, what are all of doing here? Like I said, I haven't watched lately, but still.

They're an odd fanbase for sure. Bipolar is a good word for it. When a Philadelphia team is bad, we boo them and root for the visitors. When our team is good, we buy all the merchandise, sell out every game, and travel everywhere they go.

Truly 0 to 100 in a small handful of years.

I can't be bothered to google the **** out of rounders, but as I recall from the last time I did so, baseball is to rounders as soccer is to rugby. Maybe. Kinda sorta.

Yeah dude, sorry, but watching kayaking is... not all that interesting. Not because watching kayaking is uninteresting, but because every form of competitive kayaking I've ever seen has been "let's go through one by one and see who's fastest," which is uninteresting even when it involves psychopaths jumping off waterfalls in rigid condom-boats.

Isn't baseball just rounders? But with ludicrous amounts of safety gear by comparison?

I actually googled it, and what I said is basically true. Rounders has substantial rule differences, beyond the equipment. It's less like baseball than baseball is like softball, but might be more like baseball than rugby's like soccer.

Um... maybe Australian football to rugby is a decent comparison for the degree of similarity, but I'm not really familiar with either of those sports, so... all I can say is "google the **** out of it."

Nope, not excited. I'm really not that big of a fan truth be told as I find it to be one of those sports that's fun to play, but boring to watch unless the ball manages to clock someone in the head or a fight breaks out.

I agree, but in this case... I'm willing to try watching it, given the circumstances. BOTH of my teams are one game down right now. They've each won one and lost two in the five-game series for the division playoffs.

Also, my little sister has been a softball-playing badass since about the time she was eleven, so I've built up a tolerance for the boredom of the game. Not that softball and baseball are the same, regardless of the BS the IOC is getting their international federations to pull, but still.

Not really. They just stick lances through rings now. Oddly sexual, but no one gets hurt.

...though basketball is a curiously boring sport, all things considered. Baseball really does interest me more.

That'd be more entertaining than basketball....
