Bethesda having hard time with Sonys online service

Seems according to reports Bethesda (Elder Scrolls Oblivion) are having difficulty with Sonys online service. Bethesda want to support downloadble content for Oblivion like they have for the PC and Xbox 360, but they have no clue about how to implement that feature to the PS3 version as Sony didnt release enough information to games developers early enough and the developers have been claiming the programming process is to difficult for Sonys online service.

Spokesperson Pete Hines said:
“We plan to support downloadable content on PS3, but we couldn’t tell you how or when it will be out, because it’s not clear how we’re going to do that yet,” said spokesperson Pete Hines. He added, “Although it’s impossible to say which is the better between [Xbox Live and PS3 Online], Xbox Live is easier to implement because we’ve had a much better sense of it an earlier state than with PS3 and it seems easier to work with.”

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is being released for PS3 on 23rd March.

Re: Bethesda having hard time with Sonys online service

hahah thats what the ps3 gets!!

Re: Bethesda having hard time with Sonys online service

Maybe the PS3 wasn't meant for Oblivion- Xbox 360 kicks the crap out of the other systems. touche'!

Re: Bethesda having hard time with Sonys online service

Thing is, they have the time. The PS3 version of Oblivion ships with all the current download content included. Still, backs up what other developers have been saying, that Sony haven't given them enough support, unlike the 360 and Wii.

Yeah seems Sony were more worried about their 'Rivals' finding out what features and what specs the PS3 had that they were way to secretive with it and kept to much stuff from developers.

Re: Bethesda having hard time with Sonys online service

Eventually, the PS3 is going to fall below the other systems because of flaws and whatnot, just because of them trying to remain secret... from the very start I had a bad feeling about them...

Re: Bethesda having hard time with Sonys online service

I don't think they will. If they get their act together they'll win the console war again. Is there a thread for this already, before I get too into the old console wars discussion.

They had rocky start and some big tech issues and such and really annoyed us European gamers by delaying release here and charging us the most but they will still do as well as always... seems no matter what they always land on their feet. In a way im hoping they dont to teach them a lesson or two but im sure they will.

We had some console wars threads but think most are closed now.

Re: Bethesda having hard time with Sonys online service

In some odd way, I just feel like there's something wrong about Oblivion on the PS3. To me, it seems like it should be for PC and 360, because that's what feels right (except PC sometimes because of its obscene slowness). Just something about me and Sony just doesn't go together right.

PC & Xbox 360 screams Microsoft thats why and seems sacrilege to have anything from there on PS3 :P

If you have beefy PC there is NO slowdown :ninja:

Im not Sony's biggest fan right now, after delay and price of PS3 so...

Re: Bethesda having hard time with Sonys online service

Thanks for the update, Andy. I was tempted to hold out till the PS3 came out before I bought Oblivion. I'll definitely be getting it for the Xbox 360 now. +rep

No problem, plus Xbox Live is the best online service and the easiest to use, design for and set up ^_^

Xbox 360 version gets all the PS3 'exclusive' content anyway

Re: Bethesda having hard time with Sonys online service

Haha! I noticed when I saw the PS3's rather uninspiring launch line-up... ^_^

But yeah, Xbox Live looks absolutely stunning and probably performs even better. I'll be signing up for a gold xbox live membership the moment I move house.

Yeah there line up was voted one of worst in gaming history and there overall review scores for all launch games was embarrassing...

Id have Xbox Live now if i could set router up for my PC :getlost: but its being a pain & i might have to get a new modem to get it working...

Re: Bethesda having hard time with Sonys online service

Atari founder Nolan Bushnell said the same thing about designing for PS3
Q: What about Sony’s PlayStation 3 Strategy?
A: I think Sony shot themselves in the foot… there is a high probability [they] will fail. The price point is probably unsustainable. For years and years Sony has been a very difficult company to deal with from a developer standpoint. They could get away with their arrogance and capriciousness because they had an installed base. They have also historically had horrible software tools. You compare that to the Xbox 360 with really great authoring tools [and] additional revenue streams from Xbox live… a first party developer would be an idiot to develop for Sony first and not the 360. People don’t buy hardware, they buy software.

Here another article about Oblivion on the PS3 that says it looks better and loads faster on the PS3 IGN: PS3 Oblivion loads quicker, looks nicer than 360 - Joystiq

meh I'm not getting one anytime soon

How can you say that? How have they ruined it?

The games the same, nothing different except GFX Tweaks and it comes with all the plug-ins and extra content already. Just having trouble setting up and downloadable extras with Sony's overcomplicated online system. I think its a very smart move by Bethesda and remember its costing them just as much to develop it for the PS3 if not more on Blu Ray discs, they are just trying to gain more exposure and publicity over a wider market for their game which i respect and its a very wise business decision.
