Big Question

I'm in my Sophomore year of High School and am starting to try and create a direction in my life. Everyone I know lately has been telling that I would be a great teacher and I think that may be the way to go. I'm a socialite, love to make fun of people and I'm the smartest person I know. I want some opinions apart from my pizza-throwing friends and uneducated parents.

Re: Big Question

I wanted the same thing, and my school offered a class called "Exploring and Practicing the Art of Teaching" (a long title, I know, but it was two separate classes). After taking that class, I know that Teaching isn't the easiest thing out there. You need to take Child Psychology and other Psychology courses and (if you're going to be a high school or middle school/junior high teacher), you're going to have to specialize in your field. I don't think you want your students teaching you things about a subject you don't like. (my 10th Grade Geometry Teacher didn't know ANYTHING about math, nor is that what she went to school for). The class didn't do much for me anyway, but it did crack open my eyes a little to the world of teaching. I still like the idea of teaching, but I've learned that I like the idea of counseling better. My advice would be to ask teachers (like you said) and get the ins and outs of teaching, and (if it's available) take a class that has something to do with teaching. Job Shadowing is also an option, which is what I did in my class, but that was for Elementary level which I don't like...sorry children lovers, just not my cup of tea :).

Re: Big Question

I've made the decision that I'm going to be a high school teacher. I haven't figured out what subject, but I'm leaning towards math. I'll go into why exactly I've made these decisions if you want me to, but my advice to you is that you should evaluate yourself. What are you good at, and what do you like to do? I know these seem to be just generic questions that anybody will tell you to ask yourself, but my decision to be a teacher was partially based off of my answers to those questions.

There's no hurry to figure out what you want to do with your life, though. There are plenty of people out there that haven't figured it out even by the time they're a sophomore in college, let alone in high school.

Re: Big Question

The thing you have to keep in mind about teaching is there is a lot (like ungodly amounts) of homework (see what I did there?). You're going to have to plan classes, correct homework, etc. Most of it on your own time.

That being said, I don't think you should do something just because you think you'll be good at it. You should do something you can enjoy and learn from. If teaching still ticks all the boxes for you, then by all means.

What else do you enjoy/are good at?

Re: Big Question

Don't knock music. I just enrolled in an Adv Diploma in Music Performance today, actually, and good session musicians make pretty big money. Better yet, you're essentially working for yourself.

Or you could teach music (instrumentally). You don't even need any official qualifications, just be good at what you play. You can charge $20 for a half hour lesson, and if you fill your books, that's $40 an hour. Not bad at all.
