Blade Kitten first look:

Warning: Cat-girlishisness (Tsuyu, COME LOOK!)

March 5, 2010 - Who doesn't love cat girls, right? Whether they're spinning leeks, or wiggling their buts, or doing other even weirder things I've seen on YouTube, cat girls are what people like Clements dream about on a nightly basis. In Blade Kitten an upcoming Playstation Network game, cat girls also beat the living hell out of everyone that stands in their way.

Blade Kitten is an original IP by developer Krome. You remember Krome, the studio that brought you Ty the Tasmanian Tiger. Those dudes. The game stars Kit Ballard, an interplanetary Breaker (think bounty hunter). She's got pink hair, cat ears, and a tail, so you know the developers watch way too much anime. She also has this huge floating sword thing called the Darque Blade.

The game starts off with Kit accepting an assignment to track down a criminal, only to have the assignment stolen by some beyotch with a British accent and Victorian clothing. She also blows up Kit's ship, further enraging the cat girl. Say it with me everyone: cat fight!

Blade Kitten is a 2.5D action platformer. Kit runs, jumps, slides and fights her way through large, exotic levels. Along the way she kicks every bad guy's ass and collects mad loot. The levels are surprisingly large and multitiered, especially for a downloadable title. After playing for an hour I had only played two levels. They're deceptively large, too. You can see whole sections in the background that look inaccessible, but then there will be a teleporter that zaps you back there. Later you'll do a ground pound and find that there's a huge basement area that you can backtrack through to find treasure. It's not Shadow Complex big, but it feels pretty similar.

There are some basic puzzles that I saw, but most of the game seems to be more action oriented. Kit rarely stopped moving the entire demo. She's constantly running, climbing walls and beating up bad guys. There are a ton of moves in the game. Kit clings to nearly every surface, and can even dangle from ceilings. She can do wall jumps to leap up through areas too slick to climb. She can even use her blade to anchor herself to surfaces to keep from being blown away.

Kit's Darque Blade appears to be her only weapon in the game, and the combat in the first few levels was really basic. I've been told she upgrades her move set and gets more powerful as the story progresses, though. There are also a variety of other gameplay elements, like Noot, a mount that looks like a more colorful tonton from Star Wars. Noot can charge through rock walls, leap chasms, and generally traverse levels faster.

Me-ouch!

There's also Skiffy, a flying uh... dog thingy. He's cute, but also kind of gross. Skiffy is useful for opening passages as he can wriggle his way into vents or machines. Players can also use Skiffy to find extra money hidden in the level.

Blade Kitten is looking pretty good. It's fun, and it's fast paced, and the story is entertaining and wacky. I'm a big proponent for quality downloadable titles, and Krome seems to be delivering just that.

Blade Kitten comes out this Spring for PSN. We've got exclusive screens and videos for you, so hit the sidebar and check 'em out.

Looks interesting, I may download this for my PS3. I just wish all the downloadable games on PSN had a trial version like XBLA so it wouldn't have to be a gamble.
