I'm guessing you've heard of this guy and his massacre of Norwegian teenagers. At least in Sweden it is (understandably) big news as his trial is currently underway. Now, I wanna discuss a tiny little detail:

If you believe the media he trained to shoot guns by playing "vidja games".

He played World of Warcraft.

He trained for his massacre.

By playing World of Warcraft.

World of Warcraft. A MMORPG.

Unless they've changed it, even his Wikipedia page says he prepared for it by playing WoW.

Wikipedia said:
"Breivik's manifesto included writings detailing he used to play first person shoooter games such as Modern Warfare 2 and World of Warcraft to relax and for "training-simulation".

Note that they call it a first person shooter and compare it to Modern Warfare 2. Also note the three o's in "shoooter".

In the media here he was quoted as to saying he played Call Of Duty to 'train' but took time off planning the massacre by playing WoW for 16 hours a day. The media just want to blow the blame games thing out of proportion again.

Heres the article I saw: Anders Breivik 'trained' for shooting attacks by playing Call of Duty

'The court also heard that Breivik took what he called a "sabbatical" for a year between the summers of 2006 and 2007, which he devoted to playing another game, World of Warcraft (WoW), "hardcore" full time. He admitted he spent up to 16 hours every day that year playing from his bedroom in his mother's Oslo flat.

But he insisted WoW had nothing to do with the attacks he carried out last year, leaving 77 dead. He said: "Some people like to play golf, some like to sail, I played WoW. It had nothing to do with 22 July. It's not a world you are engulfed by. It's simply a hobby.'

One thing cracked me in that article and it was the following:

'The 33-year-old said he practised his shot using a "holographic aiming device" on the war simulation game, which he said is used by armies around the world for training.'

How many armies can use CoD for training their army? Pretty sure the Commando perk and Martyrdom dont work in real life and noob tubing wouldnt be advised...

At least in the United States, it's been ruled again and again that the media (including VG developers) are not responsible for what people choose to do after voluntarily exposing themselves to material. Crazy people are crazy people. Period.

Though... it would be kind of hilarious if it had that kind of impact in some cases. Imagine that one poor guy who plays nothing but tetris and tries to destroy a city block by jumping from a 20 story building.
