College/Jobs

I don't know where I should go to college to get a degree or something In technology.. Im looking for something like Game Designing Or Computer Prgramming... Im not sure what Type of an education I will need or anything...

What do you guys think I should do?

I want something that I would like but other people will recognise me for it also... So like a game designer... I know it is hard to get in to this stuff because everyone is getting Technology type careers now... I want to know what type of an Education i would need to go to something like this and what type of Job You think I and other people will be interested in?

Thanks

Re: College/Jobs

Have you/do you like writing computer programs? Do you/have you ever used 3D imagery? Game programmers use these types of things a lot in their careers. Software developers are mostly coders. Do you like networking computers? Do you like using routing protocols and playing with switches and routers?

You need to ask yourself what you like to do, not what you think will make you the most money, or will be the hottest trend.

I myself, don't have the patience for coding. I do like to play around with routers and switches. So, I chose Computer Networking/Computer Security as my fields of study.

Computer Forensics is also a rapidly growing field. If you like law and computers, this could be a good career for you.

That is quite a huge question =x

Re: College/Jobs

Yeah Im only 12/almost13 now and Im not sure what the big difference between all this is.. well yeah Coders and stuff like that I know but There is ALOT of stuff involved in making games... I just want to be Part of if not the creator Of a next big game...

Re: College/Jobs

Honestly, at your stage in life, just continue to look out for whatever interests you. Games interest you, and actually the modding section is a good beginning, as it exposes you to character scripts, game Objects, and game modules.

Look around on the internet for coding tutorials, like for Java, Basic, heck even C++ and Dreamweaver (for making web pages) would be good to at least look at, even if they are a little hard to understand without proper guidance.

Look at the 3D modeling program called Maya (which is wickedly expensive for a real full version) which is amazingly cool. It also takes a lot of time and practice to use (so my friends say, who are in the Electronic Gaming major).

But just keep aware of these things, find out what you like, and what you don't like so much.

You have to remember not everyone on Earth is recognized. There are a lucky select few who have the privelage to be in the public eye, albeit they only get "15 Minutes of Fame" sometimes. I suggest a career in which you are comfortable and which you can work with enjoyment. There are many people who hate their jobs because they didn't take life seriously or they didn't plan ahead. I'm sure there are some Physicists who are doing amazing things and we don't even know their names. As for myself, I'm going into science. I want to be a weapons technician or possibly a munitions builder. I can see it now, in 20 years the US Army will be blowing people up with a weapon I made... Oh that would be awesome... *happy sigh*

Re: College/Jobs

As Devalion said if you are serious about starting into the games designing/and production process of computer games then you will need to start learning some coding languages and modelling programs and at any age they can be quite daunting at first and you might start to question whether you have what it takes to get into that line of work straight away. Just have to study hard, practice and learn as early as you can as it takes many years to get to a good enough level to say you are truly ready to be part of a development team and also its quite hard to get yourself 'Out there' and recognized. Its a really tough and cutthroat business to get into and a lot of people stray away from the design part of it and end up doing something else in the trade.

Takes anywhere from about 5 to 9 years of college and university to be fully qualified to a point where people might be interested in employing you.

Re: College/Jobs

As Fable Freak said, you should go for something you feel comfortable with and enjoy doing - that's not to say that you shouldn't allow yourself to be stretched in your job (which will sometimes make you feel a little uncomfortable especially when trying something new). And he is right about recognition - it is rare in many fields and a lot of people are recognised posthumously. My step mother works for the Russian Space Programme and is rarely recognised for her work in the field - yet many of her discoveries have furthered their research significantly.

Work experience is a good thing too - if possible, contact companies who do what you want to do in the future and ask them if you can be the photocopy guy for a while or shadow a professional and learn from them - you probably won't be paid but you could learn a great deal.

Above all, stay in school, work hard and apply yourself. Learn to figure out your specific giftings and talents and improve upon them so that you can be the best you can be in whatever field you choose. Having said that, some of the most successful people I know personally didn't do well in school - but if you can achieve then you should aim to do that rather than drop out and hope to become Richard Branson...
