Community Spotlight v. 8: Devalion
Dun-dun-daa! Can it be true? Is it Wednesday all over again? I swear this comes sooner every week now… Oh well, all time warps aside, it is time once again for the projectego.net Community Spotlight!
This week I found myself in the boggy shade that is the Sarchasm… apparently… and immediately found myself face to face with Devalion, our lovable wit slinging colobus monkey… yes, I said wit… and yes, it may possibly be a typo… or is it?
Only one way to find out!
Hexadecimal: Well, thanks for putting up with all the various scheduling difficulties we've been having... If only we could all get paid to sit and poke about the forums, work issues would never be a problem.
I should warn you when we begin that I am into my cups at the moment...
I never knew you were an industrial fan, let alone a fan of FLA. So, my first question is how long have you been one and what is it about the genre that appeals most to you? hehe I've been gradually trying to get Andy into it without much success...
Devalion: Well first off, being into the cups is the best way to do interviews, I have found.
Hmm, I started liking industrial music maybe five years ago. I recall that I really liked the way Fear Factory sounded, with all the machinery sounds, clanging, and production. I know that Fear Factory isn’t truly industrial, but that is what got me into it. I enjoy it because I have a thing for Techno as well, and Metal, and it’s almost like a rough combination of the two (for some artists, at least). I have found, with that particular genre, you either hate it or you love it. This is especially true some of the weirder stuff, which has very repetitive beats. If a metal fan doesn’t like techno, odds are they won’t like some industrial music. The same goes for a Techno fan that doesn’t like metal won’t like some industrial stuff.
Hexadecimal: Yeah, I've found that as well... I really love the fusion found between the two genres. I like the heavy beats and guitar and vocals of metal, while still having the flow and ambiance and electronic influences... mmm... like Skinny Puppy...
Well, other than fantabulous music, I'm going to assume that you also enjoy the odd video game or 2, or 3, or 12 thousand...
so, what is it about games that you like most, and like least? Why do you play them?
Devalion: Hmm, I guess the thing about games that I like most about games, is that it is a break from the normal doldrums of reality. No matter how exciting life can be, there is always somewhere else that might be more fun that you can imagine.
The thing I like least about video games is that I don’t get paid to play them.
As I said up above, I use video games as an escape. Often, when I talk to people who don’t play video games who ask me why I play them, and I use the word “escape”, it brings up less than pleasant images of the activity. However, this is not always the case. Used in moderation, like anything else, taking a break from stress can do wonders for both your psyche and your attitude towards the stuff you take a break from. So, uh, yeah, basically it’s just a stress reliever.
Hexadecimal: Is your life particularly stressful then?
And if you could have any developer make any game you wanted with various whips and cattle prods, who would the developer be, and what game would you force them to make? And why?
Devalion: No, not right now really. Paying bills, working, etc. Everyone needs some escape time though.
And I would absolutely love to see Square make a Wheel of Time trilogy game, as it is by far the most in-depth and extensive series of novels I have yet to come across. I bet Square would do a great job, however, it would be tough to include all the characters in any meaningful way, so there might have to be some modification to the storyline so that the game doesn’t take years to complete.
Hexadecimal: So you like the Wheel of Time too? Nice. Do you like Sword of Truth series by any chance? Did you know there is already a Wheel of Time video game?
Well, other shabbier games aside, what exactly did you like most about Fable? And how did you find you way to our fantastical Fable site?
Devalion: Sadly, I have not read the Sword of Truth series. I did indeed know that there was a Wheel of Time game, as my roommate recently got it. Overall, I wasn’t terrible impressed with it. If they remade it as an Oblivion-type game (it kind of was, but not really) with enhanced, um.., everything, then it would truly rule.
Fable, eh? I enjoyed it being an action-rpg, as opposed to many turn based games. I enjoyed the fact that you can explore most of the world before doing the first quest. I enjoyed replaying it many times to get every last speck of equipment that I could. I even enjoyed addicted my roommate’s friend to it.
The first thing that drew me to the board was, ashamedly, the Singing Sword *gasp (how unoriginal!)* But it was true. I had found almost everything else out that I needed to know about Fable from other sites, and figured that I would give these forums a shot. HOWEVER, I used the SEARCH function to find the threads about the sword. I swear, it is the same on any other forum… search function people… use it… love it… cover it with duck sauce…it will be delicious.
Hexadecimal: Duck sauce eh?
How about enlightening us all on the goings on of a day in the life of Devalion? What kind of hobbies do you have? What do you do for a living? Have you ever killed a man in Reno just to watch him die? Did he have a family? You monster? ... Wait that last one wasn't a question...
Devalion: Hmm, well besides gaming, I try to go to the gym as often as I can. Gaming and the gym don’t really mix, most would say, but I disagree! There is nothing better after pumping some iron, then pumping some lead into another player’s head on Halo. Is drinking a hobby? My liver says I do a lot of that. Back when I was a sophomore and junior in college I would write a lot, just to jot down some memorable ideas.
As for work, right now I am trying to find an entry-level helpdesk job in the IT field, which kinda sucks right now, since I don’t have any work experience. I got the piece of paper, but no experience. And, apparently, you need work experience to get work experience.
I did not kill a man in Reno, but I did off a guy in Alaska. We were being chased by a pack of hungry wolves, and well, he kind of tripped and fell. Well, maybe “tripped and fell” isn’t the right way to describe it. He kind of got shoved hard while I tripped him. Natural selection baby, natural selection. Survival of the smartest. He was just an old man* anyways, so he didn’t have any family. A monster? A monster you say??
“Don’t look at me like
I am a monster,
Frown out your one face,
But with the other
Stare like a junkie,
Stare like a zombie,
While the mother,
Arms to the sky crying,
“Why, oh why?”
Yeah, I uhh, like Tool as well.
*note: no old men were harmed in the making of this interview.
Hexadecimal: Sure, drinking is a hobby! At least... I sure hope it counts as a hobby... that or a lifestyle...
gym eh? I'm on the ultra lazy side of the spectrum. My ideas of exercise... aren't exactly... gym related... but I commend your efforts
hehe silly old men... When will they learn?
well, aside from the slaying of the geezer in the Alaskan freezer, what is your happiest memory?
Devalion: Happiest memory? Hmm, that is quite a tough question. It would probably be my summer going into my senior year of college. My hometown friends that I’ve known for fourteen years and I would sit outside drink a beer and talk about random stuff. It was cool because fireflies used to come out at dusk, and make a little sparkle show for us all.
Hexadecimal: Sounds pretty.
And what do you like most about projectego.net? ... it's ok if you hate us, you can just make something up... nobody reads these anyway... *cough*
Devalion: I like the site. I have to admit, it is much tamer in content than other sites that I read, but that is to be expected and encouraged, since it is a site for all ages about a game. Overall, the people are really cool, with varied walks of life and ages, and that makes for a great experience.
Hexadecimal: Well, I think I have about everything I need... before I wrap up, is there anything you're just dying to tell my readers? Secret powers? A time machine? An erotic POG collection?
Devalion: One last piece of advice: don't drink the punch. I did, and the afterworld isn't really quite what you would expect. At least it was nothing that was told to me. I expected all the clouds and angels and suchlike. I didn't expect chili dogs and fishhooks. Or the matador. He was a little weird. But his goldfish was great conversation.
Hexadecimal: hehe too late... I am constantly all over the punch...
Well, thanks Devalion for taking the time to chat with me and I hope it wasn't so awful that you can't block it out with minimal therapy
Devalion: Anytime! and get live, its so much fun to hear a squeaky little kids' voice get cut off as he trash talks you and then steps into a plasma.
And that settles that. Devalion rhymes with medallion. What a time to be alive.
Thanks goes once again to Devalion for taking the time to talk to me, and I invite you all to join me again next week when I go all medieval on your face in the next Community Spotlight.
