Connecting an Xbox 360 to my XP PC

I want to connect my 360 to my XP PC. It's already all connected to the network. I just need to figure out how to configure it. My setup is:

  • My PC is connected to my router wirelessly.
  • My 360 is conneced with an ethernet cable (wired).
  • My fathers PC (which is running Windows 7) is connected with an ethernet cable aswell (this will become relevant in a minute).

Now, my Xbox connects to the net fine. I can download updates, get on the market place, download groovy Fable 2 stuff, etc. I cannot seem to connect to my PC. I click Network Options -> Test PC connection, and it finds my dads computer (named Sconce) fine. I'm assuming that this is because he is running Windows 7. It doesn't seem to notice any other computers in the house (3 others: Mine, my sisters and my mums), which are all connected wirelessly and running Windows XP. When I click "PC Not Listed" it tells me that there is an error with my connection and suggests ways to fix it that don't work.

From the computer side of things: When I open WMP I click media sharing and enable it. When it comes up with the "who I would like to share to" window my 360 is not noticed.

Rep for anyone who helps me out.

Need to have Windows Media Center on your computer.

Re: Connecting an Xbox 360 to my XP PC

It doesn't say that on the Xbox website. It implies I can set it up with just XP and SP2 (I have SP3 but the option wasn't there). It says:

To connect the Xbox 360 console to this computer, you must be running Windows XP Service Pack 2, Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, or Windows Vista.

Re: Connecting an Xbox 360 to my XP PC

I'll take a big ol' leap and say it's the wireless, try plugging your pc/laptop/whatever into your router and see if your xbox picks it up then.

Re: Connecting an Xbox 360 to my XP PC

I can't. There's only one ethernet cable long enough in the house, and it is currently connected to the Xbox.

Re: Connecting an Xbox 360 to my XP PC

Well maybe you can convince your dad to let you put your music or whatever on his computer, that would be, in my eyes, the fastest and easiest solution.

Yeah...... That's not gonna happen

I was having the same problems. now I have a whole pile of new problems. Not sure how to help. I'm sorry.

Buy another cable

I would, but it's not a feasable solution. My dad gets ****ty when I leave the ethernet cable connected to the Xbox as it is, and I can't be arsed packing them all up just before he get's home. Particularly when I've already got a working connection, but it just doesn't want to connect.

Re: Connecting an Xbox 360 to my XP PC

You might have to play around with some of the wireless settings on your PC to enable the 360 to see it (more so than simply allowing Media Player access). I also use TVersity to link my PC to my 360 but i also use an Ethernet cable and havent really tried wireless.

Re: Connecting an Xbox 360 to my XP PC

Ok, what about connecting the Xbox directly to the PC? I've moved my Xbox into my room and connected them using a regular ethernet cable, and they still don't want to talk to each other.

EDIT: It has come to my attention that i require a crossover cable.

My 360 is connected to my PC router and ive had no problems that way but yeah i think that would require a crossover cable.

Re: Connecting an Xbox 360 to my XP PC

Ok, so I've gotten the crossover cable to work (ironically what I originally thought was the regular ethernet cable. I just had to change some settings) and the two systems are talking fine. :D I just need to enable connection sharing for it to be all ok (I really ****ing hope so). I need to fiddle with some router stuff though, so I must wait for the system administrator to return home. Thanks to everyone for at least attempting to help me, even though non of it was particularly helpful. What I mean to say is thanks for bothering to post

Re: Connecting an Xbox 360 to my XP PC

I can only connect my PC to my xbox if they're hooked up to the same router with cables, if my PC isn't hooked to a cable my xbox can find every PC in the area but mine :S
