According to widespread reports the PS3 version of Bethesdas RPG Behemoth Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is encountering a rather big problem. Its being crippled with major lag issues when their game save files exceed 5-6MB on the console's hard-drive. OPM UK editor Tim Clark encountered the bug himself and had the following to say about it...

"I first started encountering serious lag at around the 25-hour mark, and since then it's been the same: I boot up, play for an hour or so, then the framerate gets choppier until I ultimately need to restart the PS3. I'd actually already noticed that the file was creeping up in size every time I saved."

Hopefully now its been brought to Bethesdas attention the upcoming patch will remedy it.

Well I feel sorry for them and their internet access, my friend from down the street got Skyrim for PS3 and has sunk a good amount of hours into it so far and he hasn't had any problems with it so hopefully it's not such a big deal but that video made me ache inside.

The first weekend it came out I got it for 360 and I played all into the night non stop, had some lag here and there nothing like that so I'm glad I have it for 360 I'm really lucky to be able to play a game like this without a modern day Pc.

Ive tried to remove unneeded auto saves and keep down to a handful of save files just in case.

I had a feeling all that positive talk Bethesda was speaking of that the PS3 version runs excellent was total BS. This is why I very rarely buy multiplatform titles for my PS3..

Visually and such it seemed to run fine and this is the first instance ive heard of any real game experience ruining issues. Hopefully the patch comes out fast and fixes it, Bethesda reported very good sales (7 million) so be a shame for people to get rid of it because of this.

Interesting work around to reducing your save game file size on the Bethesda forums:

Steps:
  • go to your house (or some safe, small, interior space where you won't get yelled at for trespassing)
  • save your game
  • quit Skyrim
  • boot Skyrim and load up your save
  • hit select, and set the wait time for 24 hours
  • repeat the last step until the month changes (frostfall -> sun's dusk, etc...) this may take quite a while.
  • save your game

Shrinking your save game size
