Is there a trick to getting this? The LT button keeps telling me to look at those candles but I shoot it and nothing happens. I try to go over but the spikes keep knocking me back.

you have to shoot some glowing ball which will light up the candles and tell u which path to walk

There's two different parts. In one room, the candles correspond to the path you need to take across the squares. In the other, like Eclipse said, the flit switch shows you the path as you hit it.
