E3 2010: Sonic 4 Hands-On

The opportunity to play a game with the potential to revive a long lost franchise doesn’t come often. So you can only imagine my excitement when I stumbled upon a booth demoing Sonic 4.

Right from the get-go, Sonic 4’s title screen nips at nostalgia, taking on the same classic look found in the first three games on the Genesis. Even the loading screen is a callback to the older titles, featuring an eight-bit animation of Sonic perpetually sprinting in place.

While the level design and look of Sonic 4 is absolutely superb, the game still seems to be lacking an element essential to the series—speed. When you hold forward on the controller, Sonic slowly steps forward, eventually working up to a brisk walk. It isn’t until several seconds later that Sonic eventually breaks out into what might be considered a mild jog. Maybe we can chalk it up to old age, but here’s to hoping Sega yanks the lead from Sonic’s running shoes and gives him a swift kick to the behind before the game’s final release.

Expect the first installment of Sonic 4 to hit virtual marketplaces on the PS3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii this fall.

Laugh as I struggle to lift Sonic onto the first high platform in Act 1 of the Splash Hill Zone. Cry as you watch Sonic struggle to combat arthritis to move faster than a snail’s pace. And cradle your hope as we wait to see if this truly will be the game to bring Sonic back to his glory days.

... Took him forever to get to that spring.

Looks much better and I'm glad they finally fixed his running animation. Thanks, Froggy.
