Fable.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close...

Hello, everyone!
I tried googling help on this error, and these forums came up. I've read through them and tried all I could think of. I hope with these details some of you can help me.

I just installed the game (it's the PC version), and installation went fine. When I try to start it though, I get the error:

Fable.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

I clicked the Send Report button, but no fix was reported back. I checked the MS FAQ/KB. The only cause they have listed is a possible out of date driver with a Creative Sound Card. However, I'm using the the MS DSS 80, and have the most recent driver. I also more than exceed minimum spec requirements for the game. I thought it might be a resolution issue, since I have a 19" widescreen flatpanel monitor, so I reduced the system settings to 800x600x16bit and tried again - still got the same error. When trying to start now, since it's no longer the first time, I'm getting the 'game did not exit properly, etc' screen, and I've mostly been clicking the Continue Anyway button. But even if I click the Continue in 'Safe Mode' button, the same application crash error message comes up.

Any ideas on what I can do to fix this?

By the way, just in case it's relevant, my system has 2.8 GHz processor, 1G system RAM, 256 MB video RAM. The video card is an NVidia GeForce 6200. When testing both the video and sound tabs in dxdiag, all come back passing wonderfully.

Many thanks!
-Fog

Do you have a Creative sound card in the computer at all?

Do you have windows blinds?

If so it will show up in your task manager as (wbload.exe) try disabling that if you do have it and try again.

Re: Fable.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close...

I do not have windows blinds. The only w-word I have is listed in taskmanager is winlogin.

There is an on-board sound card built into the motherboard, but I disabled it through my Device Manager.

Re: Fable.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close...

One possibility I see right off, I'm not sure I have the latest NVidia drivers. When I went there to get them, it asked which version of windows I have. I have XP Pro, but I'm not sure if it's the x64 version. System Properties just says Windows XP Professional. Can you tell me how I can find out if I'm in x64 mode? If I'm not, should I use the regular XP drivers?

Thanks in advance for the tech info - not quite fable, but leading up to it... 8-)

1. Click Start
2. Run.
3. Type winver
4. Click OK
5. A dialog box displays the version that you are running

That should list your windows properties.

Re: Fable.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close...

Nevermind... looking it up it appears I have pro edition, but not x64. Updating the video drivers next.

But my specific card is not listed in the "official" list of supported video cards. But mine is better than those listed. This shouldn't cause a problem, should it? And if so, shouldn't that be mentioned on the box? I'm not wanting to buy a new video card, which isn't as good, just to play one specific game, when other games which push graphics harder run without a problem.

Try some forceware drivers and such, it seems that the GeForce 6200 has had quite a few problems with Fable from what ive been looking at but NVidia brought some drivers out to help i think, just a matter of finding the correct ones for your problem.

Re: Fable.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close...

Well, I uninstalled the old, and reinstalled the new video drivers just as it directed, but I still get the same error.

What are forceware drivers, and how do I find/use them. The NVidia site just has the selection of GeForce drivers, then OS, not a specific GeForce chipset or model.

I think these are them:

nVidia ForceWare Graphics Driver (Windows 2000/XP) - Free Software Downloads and Software Reviews - Download.com

Also heard this can help:

Download details: MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 2 (Microsoft XML Core Services)

Go there, download the file called MSXMLCAB.exe and extract the .cab file to your desktop. Then extract what's inside the .cab file into your C/windows/sys. 32 folder ... and I don't know about this part, but then try creating a new user profile to play the game in if all else fails...

Re: Fable.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close...

I checked the file I downloaded and installed, turns out it was the forceware one - same name, version, etc.

I put in the files from the cab file, and overwrote the old ones. It's still not working.

I can't create a new user in the game - I haven't got the game started even once yet.

I just realized you may have meant a new user account on windows. So I enabled the Guest account (which I had disabled way back when and never used), and logged on to the system with that account.

Fable still crashed when trying to start and with the same application error.

Tried a complete un-install - re-install?
