I noticed that there are counterattacks in Fable III similar in essence to those in Fable II that can be executed with both melee and ranged weapons. These counters also appear to be infused with a significantly larger amount of pure awesome than their Fable II equivalents, but no matter how much time I spend practicing I still can't get it right. Does anyone else have any insight to offer? I think these counters are initiated differently and I can't find a way to use them consistently.

The 'Finishers' in Fable III are different than the 'Reversals' from Fable II. Reversals are a matter of timing, but Finishers are randomly activated. They happen more often as you evolve your weapons, but after much experimentation I can assure you that there is no way to manually perform a Finisher.
Guns also have Finisher moves, but only if you're very close to the enemy you are shooting.

It's also worth mentioning that Finishers are in no way activated by flourish attacks. It's possible to simply mash the attack button on an enemy and a Finisher will still randomly activate. However, they can activate during flourishes too.

Fable II had some pretty awesome Reversal animations. My personal favorites were the ones that only activated up against walls and pieces of scenery. As it happens, I wrote a short simple guide about Fable II Reversals a long time ago: http://projectego.net/forums/threads/shadowfiends-guide-to-melee-combat.10959/#post-256676
