Writer asking for some help

Hi everyone,

As a writer who has just had a new fantasy novel published, I was wondering just how important the cover and the synopis are. How much difference do these things make in terms of the decision to actually read the book or not. If anyone gets a chance to check out my own book cover and synopsis, there a link in my profile. It would be really helpful to get some feedback and try to learn from mistakes made now, so that if I'm ever lucky enough to put another book out I can get it absolutely right!

Thanks for your help with this.

Re: Fantasy book covers and synopsis

Congratulations on having your first novel published! And a fantasy one at that... awesome. Anywho, yeah, I'm personally a believer of that whole 'first impressions count' malarkey and I do find that a book with an unappealing front cover that looks as though it has a design slapped together in MS Paint by a 7 year old doesn't normally float my boat. Fortunately however, I have pretty much limited myself to coding books and re-reading the Bible for the moment so book covers don't play a massive factor in the equation for those.

But onto the subject of your book, -- once again: congrats on having your first fantasy novel published! -- I personally think the front cover looks great. Certainly a heck of a lot better than the tripe I could come up with. Although, I haven't yet read through any of the synopsis or excerpt you included; I'll bookmark the page and take a gander this evening.

Congrats, yet again! ^_^

Re: Fantasy book covers and synopsis

Wow, congratulations on getting your books published. Plus, it sounds most interesting and the cover looks great, as well. I started reading the excerpt and you've put a lot into this book as I can see. Very detailed and grabs the reader right in. Sounds like a great fantasy book. Congrats again.;) Oh yes and +rep.:P

Re: Fantasy book covers and synopsis

Well done on getting your book published, seems like an interesting idea for a book and id say the same as Steve. The first impressions are a major thing to consider to warrant the book being a success. The front cover and synopsis are really important for grabbing peoples attention and imagination and yours is looking quite good right now.

Re: Fantasy book covers and synopsis

Thanks for everyone's encouraging comments. I really appreciate it :) It's always difficult to guess how people will react to a new story, so I'm very grateful to get such positive feedback. If anyone gets a chance to read the whole book, please do let me know and don't hesitate to ask questions.

In response to the questions about covers and the synopsis, I personally think that a good cover will at least encourage someone to pick up a book for a closer look, but it's the synopsis that will really make the difference. And after that if there's an excerpt (like mine!!) that sounds promising that could be the clincher!

Thanks again.

Re: Fantasy book covers and synopsis

I checked out your book snippet when you first signed up here (can't resist books!) and I liked it...for me the synopsis does matter - not so much the cover because some of the best books I have read have had the most crappy covers but the synopsis for me is pretty important. It needs to be catchy, grab my attention and make me want to know what's going to happen if I read it - the worst thing I can see on the back of a book is praise for another book instead or a bunch of comments from people who read another book you have written.

Seeing as it's very difficult to be published, I salute you for your accomplishments - and the good people at Amazon UK like it too, from the reviews they have given, so good for you :D

Re: Fantasy book covers and synopsis

I dig the book, man! I only just turned 19, but it's a great book and it seems like an original novel. I read the excerpt, and the book seems very descriptive...yet it's cimple at times so the reader can easily go through it and enjoy the book.

I remember when Harry Potter And The Sorcerers Stone came out, and I saw the cover and it wasn't really that appealing to me. But when I started reading it, I loved it from the start. Don't get me wrong, your cover is great. But what I'm trying to say is, a real reader will judge the writing...before looking at the cover.

And your book seems to have both a good appeal and text. I can't wait to get the book, maybe even review it on this forum. Whatever the case, I'm sure I'll enjoy it

Keep up the good work!

Thanks for that, Angel. I completely agree about the synopsis. Without a compelling one, I can't imagine many people actually deciding to read a book. I hope if you ever get a chance to read my book that you'll really enjoy it and be sure to let me know what you think if you do! :)

Re: Fantasy book covers and synopsis

sounds like a great book and for the cover illustration judging by the blurb i would say
a guy shrouded in shadow holding a blade at his side looking up at something, say an alter with a coffin or or a ship, just ideas

Re: Fantasy book covers and synopsis

Just a quick update on my book for those whom have shown an interest. I've pasted in a review from Amazon US that I think gives a gives a good impression of what the book is really like.

'One might look at The Magic Lands and find the title a little generic, and the summary may be a little cliche, but if you were to pick it up you'll see that it is full of suprises. The story is quite a roller coaster and the plot can become utterly unpredictable. I should also mention, that this isn't little red riding hood. The story is dark, bringing up memories of another dark fantasy, Pan's Labrynth. Like Pan's Labrynth, and any good fable, there is an underlying message behind it all and it is a message definitely worth hearing'.
