Food Confusion??

Can someone please explain the food to me?

I know you can only have one kind. But how come no matter how much Tofu I find in houses I never have more than 7 to sell at the pawn shop? Also it seems like when I eat one in battle the max number I can have decreases permanently. For a while it was 7, then 4, and now I never have more than 2 Tofu ever, no matter how many I pick up. Why is this?
