Been something I have been meaning to get back into for years and should have continued on this path many years ago instead of wasting the last 11 years in a dead end career that I do not enjoy. Not that I think im going to become a games designer for a living (everyones pipe dream) but would be nice to start learning some new skills so I can get foot in the door of the industry somewhere (anywhere) doing something that interests me.

I am just curious if anyone has used any game development software/editors and if anyone can recommend any good free ones for beginners or any good sites with some tutorials/tips etc. I have just download Unity after it was highly recommended and I plan to follow some tutorials from the website to get a better understanding of it.

No-one has any recommendations then? Havent had time to get myself into Unity yet but its on my to do list, also going to start learning some Visual Basic and hopefully C++ in my spare time over next few weeks (ive downloaded VB.net).

Well all these things are tools, you decide the tools based on what you want to make; each engine has its own strength and set of features and even community. However, you shouldn't really try making an open-world RPG with Unreal.

I'm learning Unity it's pretty awesome. Plenty of tutorials and community. Blender is a good free modeling tool others can be thousand of dollars. There is also UDK and Crysis engine but you need a good comp to even run those programs.

Yeah thats why im trying to start with the more basic programs and learn from there, my laptop isnt great.

RPGMaker? Some pretty good games have been made with it, and you can get different versions with varying levels of complexity.
