Games, form of art?

103905.jpg

In a two part interview on GamesIndustry.biz Peter Molyneux talks about combat in Fable 2 and they ask him the question whether games are art. Read the articles here (part1) and here (part2).

We pose the question on our forums to see what our community thinks of games. Are they a form of art? You can vote and leave feedback in this thread: Are video games a form of art?

Not sure if this was already posted. Or if it's in the right section. :ninja:

Re: Games, form of art?

In my honest opinion, yes video games are art. I've said it once, but I'll say it again- but it's its own artform if you think about it. It can express, anger (mostly), show, interpret, tell of something, engage your mind and creativity, pick you up and put you down only after you let go of the controller... that is sort of what art's supposed to do, speaking from experience. Gears of War, bloody and nonsensically gory as it is, has its own dark beauty and, as in all games, tells a story. The same goes for our beloved Fable, whose unique style and innovation far surpassed some other works. Sorry for the big freakin' lecture, but in a nutshell, games are art, whether you know it or not.

Video games are (or can be, I suppose) art. Just like books, comic books, cartoons, stage acting,TV series, movies, voice acting, et cetera et cetera all are for different reasons. Saying it's not art is like saying stage acting is not art, because it *too* requires audience participation half the time, even if unconcsiously.

Good point, but video games are, in my opinion, an interesting artform in that you actually control it when you observe it. For instance, when you look at a painting, you can only feel and imagine and look, but in a video game, you can experience it firsthand. Sure, some people really could not classify all the bloody and gory games out there as a formal art, but art is often controversial and is made to evoke certain sensations, so why shouldn't it be art?
