Re: GDC 2008 almost here!!

I've been curious about Alan Wake for some time now...

Re: GDC 2008 almost here!!

You sure know your gaming, for a woman :)

Re: GDC 2008 almost here!!

 - actually I know very little to be honest. but this title grabbed me last year when I was looking for games I might be interested in upon release and Alan Wake turned up on the list. but info has been fairly scarce for me to get hold of so I'm hoping something bigger will be produced at the GDC this year...

Re: GDC 2008 almost here!!

No I was commplementing you, it's nice to know that some of the fairer sex actually take gaming seriously. Since everyone nowdays thinks a woman should be like this or that. I wish mu GF would like the same hobbies I do
:)

Re: GDC 2008 almost here!!

I enjoy games - I might not play many varieties of them, but even if I'm just watching Steve play them it's still fun for me. The only difference between our playing styles is that I can easily clock up an obscene amount of gaming hours in a day and Steve knows when to put the controller down

Re: GDC 2008 almost here!!

Alan Wake has gripped me by the buttocks when I first took notice of it and haven't let go ever since. It got a very good vibe about it - Escape From Monkey Island meets Stephen King.

Re: GDC 2008 almost here!!

I know there have been comparisons with Silent Hill made over the last few months but I was pleased to read that it was less horror and more thriller - I prefer that, to be honest. I found certain parts of Silent Hill a bit too disturbing for my tastes and I'm hoping Alan Wake will provide an even more intelligent psychological offering. the graphics look sweet and apparently driving will be an integral part of the gameplay.

So true. One of the scariest movies I know of is "The Mothman Prophecies". There is no slashing, no brain eating or mutants - you don't even get to see the Mothman in his real shape but you know he is present during the entire movie.

For some reason that keeps me freaked out, in a good way, a lot more than if we had seen some moth monster go on a rampage and tear the guts out of people at random.

If they manage to create that eerie feeling, without having random freaks and zombies jump out at you, it will be a truly great game.

Re: GDC 2008 almost here!!

Agreed - I prefer implied menace than actual in-your-face blood and guts and gore. I like a balance though; I don't want to be thinking something truly horrific and disturbing is happening because sometimes the implied event is more upsetting than witnessing it firsthand. Y'know, screams in the background or the door closing just as so and so is advancing on a cornered victim...imagination runs wild and there's never any closure, so to speak...

When I first read about Alan Wake I did just think "oh look - fiancee goes missing, world turns a bit weird and here is our hero running around with a flashlight. Yeah, that's new." but now more info has been coming out about it, I really want to find out more and see what the gameplay is like too...

Re: GDC 2008 almost here!!

Sure - as much of a fan I am of the old school, non-fighting adventure games like Grim Fandago and the Monkey Island series, I don't think a lot of people would be satisfied with only that.

Has to be some fighting and stuff, too.

Re: GDC 2008 almost here!!

Ah GDC is almost over and no Alan Wake:(

Re: GDC 2008 almost here!!

Wired.com recently interview Shane Kim, corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios. Shane talked about Alan Wake and what lies ahead and why they are holding back on releasing information about the game. … “it is an ambitious, different kind of game. It’s exactly like the conversation we just had about Too Human. We’ve got to be careful about how we unveil that, right, so that we build on the excitement that people have and we don’t do any damage there. The good news is that it remains one of our most anticipated titles. Everybody’s asked me about it, which is awesome. Remedy’s a great partner for us. I think we’re going to have a huge hit on our hands.”
