Gears of War 2...*sigh*

So Gears of War 2 has arrived. What a big disappointment, in a way. Hear me out:

The gameplay is awesome. Horde mode is awesome fun. But the campaign? While it's fun, there just isn't any point to it. Just like in Gears of War, we're left with the plot not really moving ahead at all.

The first thing they do is telling you "So, you know all that stuff in the original game? Yeaaaah... that sorta did nothing. Nothing at all. In fact, it somehow made the Locust Horde stronger! Yeah!".

Then we get to play - after countless cutscenes. Then you get to fight... for a bit. Then it's more cutscenes. Then some fighting. And so on. Seems that whenever you get all fired up, they tear it away from you by ending all action with a cutscene.

Then we've got the bossfights. Totally unecessary and boring. And horribly clichéd. I mean, a big octopuss attacking a boat? Seriously? Both General RAAM and the Berserker fights were interesting, and in the Bereker's case, innovate. But these bosses...jeesh. And what about the final boss? Me and my co-op buddy were just holding down both our trigger buttons, not aiming or dodging attacks or nothing, and 20 seconds later we beat the game?

Dubye-tee-eff?

Then we get another cutscene, once again telling us that the whole campaign didn't lead to anything at all.

I'll still enjoy the multi-player modes, especially Horde, but the campaign....meh.

Re: Gears of War 2...*sigh*

Perhaps this is why I like the campaign - because it's not as hard as the first one was

To be fair, I've never really understood the storyline...I just like blowing stuff up...but I really do like this game (sorry!) but there have been a few times when I've thought "what the hell?" such as when you have to outrun a ball of crap...it's a bit Indiana Jones and adds nothing to the game.

Steve said something some gaming developer type person said once about that sort of thing - something along the line of a player shouldn't have to die to learn something. A level should make them think, but not have to lose their "life" in order to get a handle on how it works. And I think that's true in this case - during that Leviathan bit (and the teeth/acid thingy) it was a case of work out the formula or die. Of course you don't know the formula unless you die a few times first and it was so frustrating I wanted to give up - it seemed a bit like filler rather than proper gameplay.

However, overall I really like this game - the cutscenes for someone like me make me relived because I know I've got a mini break before I have to button mash again  and some of the enemies (like Seeders and Reavers - also those big Locust with the huge shields, swinging a mace around) are a pleasure to kill, even if they are annoyingly difficult sometimes to take down.

I like the new angle with Maria and Dom...bit disappointed that Tai and Dizzy weren't developed enough as characters...and the whole Locust vs Lambent thing was not something I expected - I'm not at the end of the game yet (just had a fight with Skorge and now trying to ride those damn Reavers and dying. A lot.) so I don't know what's going to happen next but I'm interested enough to find out...

Seems like people are able to read my mind these days and are making games easier just for my benefit - first Fable 2 and now Gears of War 2

And as a note of no interest whatsoever, does anyone else who knows what I mean think that when the bigger Locust laugh they sound like Frank Bruno?

It doesn't suck, actually. It's still a very solid game for it's game play and multi player. I just love the 'Horde'-mode they added. I'm just a bit dissapointed with all the "jumped the shark" moments in the campaign. As Angel pointed out, some things were ripped straight out of the Indiana Jones movie and, without spoiling too much, the Pirates of the Carribean.

BARBOSA COMES BACK!?

Game ruined, thanks.

Re: Gears of War 2...*sigh*

Just finished it on Hardcore last night and the ending reminds me quite a bit of the ending to Fable 2, to be honest, in terms of what you think will happen and what actually happens. Although
I did laugh when Skorge was killed (if indeed he is dead) - he's like this rock-hard bloke who you duel with earlier in the game and then he just falls off a big old bug

Re: Gears of War 2...*sigh*

RAAM would eat Skorge in any fight, any day. Every boss in GoW 2 was a wuss compared to him.

Re: Gears of War 2...*sigh*

Skorge = big girl's blouse

I was expecting something truly epic - and it was rather understated...maybe they're going to go somewhere with the whole thing in future games - a bit Fable 2 style? Hold back a bit until perhaps the next game and then make it much more challenging?

LOVED riding a Brumak though...that was AWESOME and nowhere near as irritating as trying to kill a Hydra whilst manically zooming about on the back of a Reaver (I hated all driving type parts of this game except for the Brumak - largely because NOBODY could kill it). Reavers are just Matrix Sentinels anyway...but with Locust on the back...

Re: Gears of War 2...*sigh*

Was a bit sad about what happened to my little Brumak buddy in the end though...

Re: Gears of War 2...*sigh*

Yeah, but there's no way you would have fit him in the kennel after that, to be fair...

Re: Gears of War 2...*sigh*

i enjoyed it alot, but did you notice at the end of gears one it shows skorge, the equivilant of raam in gears 2?

Re: Gears of War 2...*sigh*

I'm disappointed that so many "must have" games came out around the same time. Starting with Fable II, Gears of War 2, Call of Duty: World At War, etc. Gears of War 2 cast a shadow over my Fable II playing (I didn't even finish the story yet) and now Call of Duty is casting a shadow over Gears. I simply don't have enough time to play the games I want to play. Now with Left 4 Dead out, I'm even tempted to give that a try. Of course, my Game Stop gift card just waiting to be used is NOT helping! :P

Back to Gears though, the story seemed very short and I can definitely see where you are all coming from saying that it's pointless. However, I'm not a big campaign person. I like playing online the most. But even so, the online is disappointed. The host has a huge advantage still, the lag is still there, and now there's matchmaking like Halo? I liked the room better.

Gears 2 does have fun aspects though. Horde was fun for quite a while and some of the game modes that I newly discovered are entertaining. I liked the character Tai but it was too bad that he was developed more, like Angel said. I just wish that they spread the game releases out throughout the year though, not pile them into one month.
