The DCMS sheds further light on Labour’s plans to re-assess children’s access to games..

The Department of Culture, Media and Sport – which will be at the forefront of Gordon Brown’s proposed review of children’s access to adult video games – has outlined its intentions to re-examine the way in which adult rated video games fall into the hands of children.

Talking exclusively to MCV, a DCMS spokesperson said: “We already have strict controls for video games but we must investigate what more we can do to stop children seeing inappropriate content.

The review and our work with both the industry and public will look at how we can better help parents manage their children’s access to unsuitable games.”

Earlier this week, the Prime Minister reiterated his intentions to review the impact of entertainment on children, though ruled out further censorship of the video games industry.

Re: Government Details Video Game Reviews...

Glad to hear there will be no censorship and hopefully this will encourage companies to not remove content from games as this process may make it harder for the games to get into kids hands. It will never be totally stopped but im hoping that this will keep adult games to adults and stop so much controversy to violent games falling into hands of children.

Re: Government Details Video Game Reviews...

The re-education of parents would help - they should see exactly what their children are seeing and then maybe they would think twice about buying certain games without knowing a thing about them

Yeah and i wouldnt mind that at all. Keep the games violent and keep the 18 rating games flowing, just re-educate the parents and try and stop children getting their hands on them. That way games like Manhunt 2 etc couldnt be criticised for warping kids minds and being to violent as they were made for adults who should be free to choose.

Plus, it would mean that should a child get hold of something like Silent Hill or F.E.A.R, and is affected adversely by the content, a parent would be informed enough to be able to calm them down and explain things to them - including the fact that whilst it looks realistic, it isn't real. People underestimate how easily children are affected by what they see - on the outside they may be handling it, but inside the disturbing images won't be just disappearing overnight...

Yeah and it should be the responsibility of that parent to do just that and even make sure best they could that those games couldnt get into their hands. Just annoys me when parents buy their kids GTA games etc then complain at how violent they are and not suitable for kids. It has an 18 rating on it for a reason... saying its to violent for kids when it wasnt made for them is stupid really. Yet the press lap it up and milk it for all the controversy they can and try to make games and gamers look bad.

Re: Government Details Video Game Reviews...

That depends on what the Child thinks is "disturbing" or not. Makes me think of Sid from Toy Story. I bet he would think F.E.A.R. Is cool. but I'm not saying it's okay. Just saying that differen't kids classify differen't things as disturbing.

But I'm glad to see they want to educate the parents.

Re: Government Details Video Game Reviews...

When I worked At Gamestop a 10 year old came up and tried to get the 50 Cent game off me I told him no that it was rated for mature. I think it was mature. the Kid proceeded to tell me that his mother said that he could get the game. About 30 minutes later The mother came into the store and *****ed at me for not allowing her son to buy the game. I pointed out to her the rating on the game and she looked at me all baffled. I said it had Drug use and killing of law enforcement in it and she just told me that games are games and that it was something her son was looking forward to. I Sold her the game Because I had to but Game with mature themes will always fall into kids hands as long as parents allow their kids to play them.
I left out some of the language the kid used with me because it would just be censored on the forum.

Yeah and its those same parents who blame the games companies when their kid copies something from that game or it causes them to do something. They have to learn to take responsibility for their actions as people who work in the stores can only do so much.

You and me both Sephy! This is the way it should be, we shouldn't have people like that Thompson fella' tell us what games should be allowed to be released and sold - it should fall to the parents to say what their kid can play or not! ;)

Re: Government Details Video Game Reviews...

As long as there are lawyers parents will never take responsibility.

Definitely, and violent games shouldnt be witch hunted against by parents as they are meant for adults. If their kids are playing them and they dont want them to be then they need to do something to stop them.

Re: Government Details Video Game Reviews...

Every form of mass media has been vilified saying that it is corrupting the public, (children or otherwise) Books, Newspapers, Radio, TV, Movies, the Internet and now of course video games. while video games are not nearly as wide spread as these others that can make them all that much more scary due to them being an unknown factor to large part of the population. It would be crazy to say that these things didn't influence behavior but influence to some is corruption to others.

Of course we all know that it is definitely corrupting the public

Re: Government Details Video Game Reviews...

What's hilarious is I've read far worse books in school than many of the video games they blame society's various ills on. And was required to watch far worse movies, et cetera. It's amazing. No corrupting influences outside of hand-picked ones, apparently :-P
