Greenpeace Slams Console Makers

Greenpeace has spoken out against Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, claiming that the big three console manufacturers are not doing enough to ensure their hardware is free of unsafe chemicals and metals according to a recent BBC report.

Both Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3 were found to contain beryllium, which has been linked to lung cancer when placed through recycling processes, and softening agents known as phthalates which are banned in various products throughout Europe. The most scorn was reserved for Nintendo, who was found to have no existing environmental policies and was listed at the bottom of Greenpeace's worldwide assessment of technology companies. Greenpeace also expressed concern that there was no safe way to dispose and recycle games consoles, and invited all three companies to put forward return and recycle policies.

"This is an industry that is changing our way of life and if it does not take these challenges upon themselves to be more green we are going to be in deep trouble very, very soon" said Zeina Al-Hajj, Greenpeace's International Toxic Campaign co-ordinator.

Nintendo has maintained that its hardware is in keeping with existing directives, while both Microsoft and Sony have committed to reducing harmful materials in their consoles.

Re: Greenpeace Slams Console Makers

Been a while since those phenomenal timewasters known as eco warriors have moaned about something enough to get on the news...and I still don't give a crap. I mean, do they all live in mud huts with no power and use only the energy generated by steam or pedals to get around? Do they make all their own clothes and cook with the power of the mind as opposed to fuel? Do they refuse to buy newspapers, watch TV or go to the cinema once in a while?

No I'll bet the majority of them do not. After all, how else could they find out the stuff they know and get to the places necessary to complain about it all? We all have a carbon footprint, so stop getting on your high horses just coz your tree hugging parents wouldn't let you own a first generation game boy

Re: Greenpeace Slams Console Makers

nice zinger! if they want to make the world greener, they should turn their attention to the oil companies. its 4.50 a gallon of gas over here!

Re: Greenpeace Slams Console Makers

it seems as if uks oil/petrol/diesel price is rising every bloody second

Re: Greenpeace Slams Console Makers

Wow, what a waste of effort,

I mean, there are alot worse things people should be focusing on right now. Besides Even if what was in the consoles was really as "unsafe" as they make it out to be, I'd be dead already.

:w00t: Heey! Congratulations Andy, it's about damn time. :D

On topic though, these Greenpeace people are dipwads. I agree with Angel, these guys are as bad as Al Gore & PETA, trying to fight the cause but yet using the cause to help with the fight. "Help fight Global Warming, for a safer world for our children!" Gimme a break, it's not even Global Warming anymore (Because it's getting extremely colder as well), it's a natural Climate Change that happens every 160,000 years. No greener technology or Hybrid future is going to put an end to it either. It's just one of those natural occurrences that happens on this planet, like volcanoes, storms, and earthquakes.

That's another thing, as if these little things are a major threat to the human life cycle.. plastic bags, consoles, garbage in the park. Pfft, I don't see these people going into the woods and cleaning up animal feces to help "make the world a cleaner and safer place". They just want to have a 'safer' and cleaner area to help benefit their own life, they don't care about the planet or anyone else. I seriously doubt all those little things will make a difference to the planet, when mother Earth has experienced much much worse... like say, asteroid collisions, heat waves from the Sun, the plate tectonics shifting, etc. And these people are bent out of shape over a little pop can, or some plastic electronic with 'deadly' chemicals?

In fact, I bet if an asteroid were to collide with the planet right now, I can guarantee they won't give a damn about a cleaner environment, they'll be too busy running for cover like mice.

Re: Greenpeace Slams Console Makers

While I do agree Global Warming, or at least some sort of climate change does exist, there's a difference between helping the environment and being an ***.

Guess which one this falls under.
