A new report published on Friday affirms previous rumors that Microsoft would quietly introduce cooler-running, more reliable Xbox 360 machines this fall.
Xbox.com forum member Mrcur alleges that Microsoft has started selling more reliable Xbox 360 systems, first among them being the newly manufactured Halo 3 Special Edition console.
According to the report, at least one Halo Xbox 360 machine features the oft rumored 65-nanometer (falcon) chip which is believed to reduce overheating while improving reliability. However, the source merely confirms a new processor heat sink, although several users report quieter running machines when compared to older units indicating that the newer processor is in fact there.
In August, Dean Takahashi of the Mercury News reported that improved systems featuring the newer chips were quietly en route to North American retail.
Microsoft is not expected to identify more desirable Xbox 360 units in an effort to sell through current systems plagued with high failure rates.
