Help with mocking statues?

I am not sure if you have to mock them or what. I know when you activate them they bring up your d-pad with full expressions. Yes, up is good, down is bad, right is good, left is bad. Is there a trick? Do I have to mock their specific movement or what?

It's all about how they look, say if they're looking scared...scare them, ya see? if not just pick randomly till they don't blast ya from the d-pad, good luck!

I figured it out, if you go out of range of the selection and go back, the correct one is always in there. Aha.
