Hobbe Cave (Minor Spoilers)

I looked around but I could not find anybody discussing this. When you're on your way to Oakfield for the first time, you have to jump off the bridge and travel through Hobbe cave to reach town. In there you meet a man who says his son Joey is lost and asks you to help before the Hobbes turn Joey into one of their own. Is there actually any way to save Joey and/or his father? Even running through I can't seem to get it. Any help would be appreciated. =]

I have tried all manner of things to make this mini-quest turn out differently.

- You can't outrun the father and leave him behind to go "save" Joey before the father gets there. He'll always be at the locked door waiting for you. I guess he teleports... or something.

- You can kill the father, and "Joey" the hobbe will just stand there and not attack you. Every so often he will point and laugh, but nothing else. You're free to leave Joey the hobbe alive if you want... but he's not exactly rescued. He's still a hobbe.

I can only conclude that the unfortunate end of this father and son was just to add to the creepiness of the Hobbe Cave. You can't save them :'(

i never knew there was a "Joey" the hobbe, i guess i killed everything too fast to find out
