Hobbes Cave quest to get the guys son. Question

Is there a way to save the father and his son in this? Ive tried it twice and both times the father died and I cant find the kid. And Im not exactly sure how the father died. He was behind me this time. Well. He was waiting at the door.

I don't think you can save them mate.

You get so far then the dad shouts 'we're too late' or something like that, and his kid has been turned into a hobbe.

Ah well, **** happens. Best you can do is put them both out of their misery.

i dont think its possible to save them. you were too late long befor you ever met the guy in front of the cave.

Not entirely true.
You hear a kid crying, then some sort of choking noise than a Hobbes laughter. Suggesting that the kid was just turned into a Hobbe.

He meant that it is impossible to save the kid.
