A so-called ion-storm / super-storm.
In some parts of the world the humidity is *very* high combined with a high preassure in the atmosphere and temperature drops due to air-streams on high altitudes etc. etc.
This creates large clouds which emitts a massive amount of energy in the form of lightning when a certain point of compression is reached in the cloud.

Here, in Texas, we get a lot of bad weather, with horrible lightening, and tornadoes. If you lived through a few of them, and seen the damage they caused, you'd freak out. It's different when your there. The noise alone, is sometimes deafening. But the picture, is well done. +rep4U
