How do you upgrade your dog?!

So you buy books - how do you read them? I tried to go to the basket in the sanctuary but there aren't any options.

Do they get read as soon ass you get them?

And if you have already got your dog at say level 4, the level 2 and 3 books for each respective discipline won't show up; but if you havent done any so far, they should be right there.
