I'm so happy to say I now have a system that can play videogames. MODS!!! Yippee!

I noticed the visual interface is so much more nice then sitting in front of a 60", I have an LCD monitor maybe that's why but everything seems to 'pop' more.

Controls are so foreign to me, getting used to using a mouse and space bar. I think for most games I'll set the controls over the space bar, that way I can rest my hand.

Any advice for a newby to the domain? What are your preferred controls/settings? I'm going to be trying out alot of mods soon what should I be careful about? Are there any ways to optimize my experience? When I play a game I cannot exit except by quitting, but some menus don't have that option, how do I exit a game using my keyboard? What are some great titles that are exclusive for the Pc?

Kind of a dumb thread I know but I could use some feedback and I'd appreciate it alot. If you got a beast rig I'd love to see some pics, my friend who I work with just paid 1700$ for his and it is HUGE and LOUD haha.

WASD controls and Alt+Tab

If you mean closing the game without menus it's Alt+F4, though I'm not really sure what you mean that some games don't have "Exit Game" (or something akin) in the menus.

Say I want to quit but I'm at a loading screen, stuff like that where there is no access atm to the exit option. Also, when I'm using the game interface I can't access my desktop without closing out, is there a way to pause games and exit momentarily rather than closing altogether?
1.) http://greyviper.com/community/
2.) Traitor.
3.) Games? This and this (thanks Lenop for turning me onto the second one)
I am not a traitor I am a double agent. Plus my xbox is having loading issues and the tray is having problems opening, also I can't access the systems cache with a usb and I don't think they sell transfer cables anymore so I can't make my custom mansions

Id love to get back into PC gaming but dont have the spare cash or time to build my dream rig yet & dont just want a basic machine that im going to have to update again soon. Used to love mods, they make gaming so much better & can taylor most games to your style.

If you want to outright close the game it's either Alt+F4 or CTRL+Alt+Delete and open the Task Manager. Alternatively, you can set the game on the background as descirbed in the paragraph below, right-click the program's tab on the Taskbar and select Close from the menu.

If you just need to access the desktop you can use Alt+Tab (Tab is the key right next to Q, with the two opposing arrows), which lets you switch between open programs; or Windows+D, which simply sends you straight to your desktop. It depends on the game whether it automatically gets paused after alttabbing or not, but you can just make sure before you exit

What did you mean by setting the controls over space bar, what's so special about space bar?

Zarkes (and yes I'm going to continue to call you that because you've been known as that for years and it's easier to spell), you had better get both of these games on my behalf and submit a 500-word report on them. I would do very nasty things to be able to play these games on a console. ESPECIALLY THE TOP ONE GODDAMMIT ESPECIALLY THE TOP ONE

My PC gaming only stretches as far as The Sims 2 and retro games. So the only advice I can offer is have a good computer.

Unlike me.

*sobs*

A decent rig - especially something that runs The Sims 2 - isn't hard to come by. If you're going for a very high end machine, something like Tsuyu got, you're basically buying hardware still not utilized by today's games. So if you're thinking that by the time you get your PC set up at home you'd be needing a new one, it's wrong. On the contrary, the 8+ gigs or RAM you've got will sit for another year until games actually start using it. Same with the GPUs.

A lot of today's games does have support for 360 gamepads if KB/Mouse is too much Zarkes, plus you can always use other software (like Xpadder) to emulate the keyboard on the controller. Unless it's a point & click or one of those top-down strategy games, then I completely suck with KB/Mouse play.

I have no idea what genres you're into, but some games I'd recommend for PC (in no particular order) would be:

1. Farenheit (Indigo Prophecy)
2. XCOM: Enemy Unknown
3. Fallout series
4. The Sims 1 & 2
5. SimCity 2000
6. Starcraft II
7. Dues Ex
8. Torchlight 2
9. Half-Life 2 along with its awesome mod Black Mesa
10. Dragon Age: Origins (so much better on PC)

And an honorable mention of the RollerCoaster Tycoon series.

As for what to be careful about with mods, well that depends on the game itself. But the main thing to be aware of is that the mod is compatible with the current version of the game (usually the author will list what version it was made with), otherwise... disaster (nah, it just simply won't work). If you're dealing with mods that overwrite game files then make sure you always backup the originals in case something goes wrong.

That's cool man, I only changed it because I'm networking all my sites, easier for me, that's why I left my name in the sigg.

I was thinking of using my controller to play games with, but alot of Pc games aren't built for that in mind, the controller is limiting, like I'm playing a game where you can add your own descriptions. I'll just get used to the controls. I'm thinking about getting Witcher, always heard good things about that game.
I figure all the original data is safe on the CD so I should be fine in that area, I downloaded some launcher cracks aswell so I can keep my CD's nice and safe on the shelf.

Ugh, its the biggest button on the keyboard! lol, I was thinking of using the space bar as the activation button and having everything else over it, that way I only have to move my fingers and I won't accidentally press any other buttons when I'm resting my hand, it's annoying.

First-person shooters are better with the mouse as well. Fighting games (including heavy action adventures like DMC) and flight sims are a pain with a keyboard, though.

Just make sure you bind your keys in a way you can recognize them without looking. Saves you a lot of trouble while gaming.

Fair 'nough.

Yeah definitely give it a grab, Steam just had a sale on it not long ago for $4, not sure what their price is for it now but it's not high either way. I'd also recommend the sequel as well, one of my more favorite RPGs in recent memory.

The data is safe and sound on the discs (however they're usually compressed into archives), but if by some chance you happen to overwrite some of the installed files on the hard drive without backing it up, you'll likely have to reinstall the game if you want the original files back. Which can get pretty annoying as some games are a right bitch to install & get working. Better to save yourself all that hassle.

I used to use the controller on some games, just plugged my 360 controller in & went from there & worked well. Mouse & Keyboard becomes second nature however & you realise how much more precise the mouse is over a keyboard. Some games are really difficult with mouse & keyboard though (3rd person action adventure games & fighting games). Only played The Witcher 2 out of them both but it was superb & only played the 360 version but loved it. Would have loved to have been able to play the original but my machine wouldnt have run it.

Ive used no CD cracks/Virtual CD programs for years to save my discs from getting scratched & actually lost my Rainbow Six Vegas disc for some time before I found it but was still able to play it without it. Just saves so much hassle overall.

I've backed up Morrowind and Fable tlc since those are the games I'm modding. Since the original Fable I always said to myself, "I wish there was a black bandit cap to match the assassin shirt." Haha, going to do a texture in alilbit. Going to make all non dark/light armour sets green and black aswell, Fable so pretty Green was the only thing missing in that game. I also remember a bandit in Twinblade's camp that had a checkered one, would anyone know how to make certain items equip able? I already know how to chest spawn is that all I have to do?

I always hated Pc player's prejudice against console fand boys but damnnnn was I missing out! I can't believe they fit Witcher 2 onto the 360 haha, she's still got it.

After I'm done with Morrowind I'm going to get Oblivion, should be cheap as hell by now, discover everything I've missed out on that game, like that mutilation mod you showed me quite awhile back. Then perhaps Skyrim, if I have the coin. It'll be cool to play Dragonborn DLC after playing Morrowind, then I'll know the lore.

Man, my social life is ruined at this point!!! Good thing I got fired and my car broke down XD
