Immortality

Hey im new sooo... im jus gonna to the point.
In Fable, what does the word "immortal" mean? As most of you know, Jack of Blades is "immortal" in Fable. Now, if he is immortal, why does he die? Now I know a lot of you guys are saying: hey, when your immortal, you can still die, now yes thats true, but there is supposed to be some specific way of dieing when your immortal. So for some of you guys who don't get it, ill give a few weird examples: vampires, steaks and thats all i can think of right now... hey whats that empty bottle of vodka doing on the floor? Oh yeah, so im sure theres a lot of theories about what immortality exactly means so post whatever you think. By the way if i put this thread in the wrong place please tell me, even though it says to put all the crap and spam you want to put in the Tavern Cellar, but like I said, im new. Thanks.:)

Re: Immortality

they perhaps meant immortal by his legacy as he was known for a looooong time. either that or the way that he could take over the bodies of other heroes with the mask

welcome by the way

Re: Immortality

Think Sauron of Lord of the Rings, you can destroy his physical form but as long as the One Ring remains so does he. Same sort of deal.

Re: Immortality

Lol... Nice post

Re: Immortality

Liches in Dungeons and Dragons do the same thing. Basically a Lich is a powerful spellcaster who has succeeded in transferring his soul from his body into something called a "Phylactery" or more common referred to as a "Soul Jar".

This makes the spellcaster undead, however unlike lesser undead who are nothing more than shambling bones or rotting flesh, the spellcaster keeps all his powers and wits. As the years pass the body of the spellcaster starts to decompose and stuff giving him the "undead look" though.

So yeah - JoB could be called a form of Lich, the Mask is his Phylactery, however since it takes over the body of whoever wears it he doesn't look undead.

Re: Immortality

Wow *sniff* you know about me so well Tsuyu. I feal honored that my kind have become so well known. Then again...that means you know...my weaknesses! Curse you Tsuyu, you shall not be let to live now that you know my secret! Of course anyone who reads the Monster Manual will know about me, but that is aside the point!

Re: Immortality

Silly rabbit masks are for jack.

Re: Immortality

elves off lord of the rings are immortal caus they cant die from old age
but they can get killed in battle in a car/chariot crash etc
so this is the same thing

Re: Immortality

Basically, immortal mearly means that you cannot die by natural causes such as age, drowning, falling off a 20 story building, etc. Of course there is always a way for them to be killed by another such as a beheading or obliteration with a very annoying divine spell.

Re: Immortality

Ah, clones. I have a question then. If you were to kill your clone, would that be considered suicide or homicide? Answer that and you shall recieve... The Fork of Truth!

Well, simply put you can slash and hack away at JoB's body all you want, because that "is not him" - he has bound his "life", if you wish to use that term, to his Mask - so he is, in a sense, the Mask and will never truly die until it is destroyed.

Re: Immortality

To make Tsuyu's explanation a little more confusing we can put in the understanding of ethereal presence. Jack is a soul, in more or less sense, that has become powerful enough to manifest himself into physical form. Being that he is an ethreal presence also explains his control over the spirits of the ancient, archaic minions and summons. Unfortunately it is usually a universal law that conscious spirits, unlike ghosts and the sort, must hold close to a physical medium, or otherwise they cannot come in contact with the material realm. This medium is the mask which he wears. By casting the mask into the pool of lava, you destroy his link to the material realm and he becomes nothing more than a wandering essence. Or perhaps you wore the mask, allowing Jack to transfer his conscious being into yours, and being that he as far stronger than you on magical and spiritual terms, he can then consume your soul and take control of your body.

This has been a period of sharing what I know, though most will have no idea of what I just said. Then again, I don't even know what I just said, or what we were talking about. Who are you people and why do I have no skin!?

Re: Immortality

so in fable to be immortal you must have... some mask or hat or item which your soul is within?

As far as we know, yes. There could be other ways, but they aren't really explored.

Re: Immortality

It could be a fancy hat or decrepit mask...or it can be a shiny rock with a mystic engraving. Mediums are anything that can be or are imbued with mystical properties that would allow the housing of a form of energy. Another good example are the soul gems in Elderscrolls. You can use the soul gems to entrap the souls of mobs to use to recharge your magic weapons.
