Yes Sevenna, it IS an old age thing. Mostly in stories, they are the wise ones, who see beyond petty squabbling to the greater 'story', if you will, playing out.

Take Zuko's Grandfather from Avatar; He onces enjoyed fighting earth and water troops. Now, he's seen past his mistakes, and just hopes to live a life of peace and prosperity. Heck, he even snuck into the Earth Capital that he couldnt destroy after a 600 day siege, which resulted in his only son's death, and caused his 'peace spree' if you will. Of course, when he 'snuck' in, he was acting as a Refugee, and was living a peaceful life there with Zuko. If they are found by their home land, the Fire Nation, they will be captured. If anyone else finds em, they're dead men. They figured why not act as refugee's. They even cut off their pony tails!
