The Penumbra
Currently back in that mood for those genre's of music. After finding a decent song from South Korea (courtesy of Cracked =3) it sort of re-ignited that genre in me. Here's the video in case you wanna hear/watch it.

The first 28 seconds are some intro thing... The song actually starts at 00:29.

So does anyone have any suggestions of good music in this genre? I know of M.O.V.E. (who's older stuff rocks), Utada Hikaru (all of which rocks even the english stuff), and Dream (who's older stuff is also better than the new), and Maximum the Hormone (who while good, has a lot of really repetetive and bad songs >.<).

Giki, I'm lookin at you. Anyone else who has suggestions too that'd be great. Please link some examples too like mine above ^ I can also post some examples of the ones I've mentioned if anyone likes.

I can't take anything that comes out of Japan seriously. Those guys are crazy!

Anything by Ayumi Hamasaki, really.

Ayumi Hamasaki/Crea(a pseudonym) - M

J-Pop is my guilty pleasure. IDGAF.

Well for starters have you ever heard of Takako Okamura? Her best work is definitely from the '80s and typically consists of some very catchy synth intros and outros. Another oldie from the '80s you may be interested in is Susumu Hirasawa, his style is not so easily categorized, but he falls more into the New Wave & Synth-Rock genres.

If modern is more your thing, then I believe you'll get a kick out of Denki Groove, they're work is unique to say the least. They're primarily a 90s group, but they still churn out new material as of today.

Not sure which you're more interested in for right now, modern material or stuff from the '70s-'90s? Lemme know and I'll oblige.

I'm for both oldschool 80's and more modern stuff really but you're making me really wanna watch berserk again cuz of this song. GAWD Berserk is prolly my favorite anime/manga ever. And i do NOT say that lightly as it beats out other favorites of mine like Hellsing and Deathnote. Gatts is THE man, period, my f***ing hero.

One of the much better Japanese artists out there that still remains underrated is Boom Boom Satellites. They're a combination of Electronica, Breakbeat, Experimental Rock, with elements of Ambient & Downtempo. They changed their sound a few years ago for a more mainstream approach, but aimed for their roots with their last album.

Old Sound:

New Sound:

If you don't like BBS, I'm going to cry. -_-

The only J band that ever did anything for me was The Pillows.
I don't have the first clue what they're singing about but they do know how to sound good.

That they do, the Pillows are one of the best, ever. Period. No matter the language.

Then you guys would probably also enjoy Asian Kung-Fu Generation as both bands are similar.

Some of their stuff:
Siren II
Lies to Wonderland (the lead guitarist is the one singing for this)
Road Movie
Loop & Loop

Another band you might like Branden is "Siam Shade", I cant remember if I sent you some of their stuff before, but they're a Heavy Metal/Punk band. Broke up a decade ago unfortunately.. :(

Their best song is Imagination, but Youtube doesn't have the studio version of it.

I'll share you a bunch of oldies and new stuff in the next post with Pop and so on, rather not try to fit too much into a single post. Also, if you're interested I do have some Chinese Pop/Rock.

So yea I totally enjoyed Boom Boom Satellites. That first song, right up my alley, perfect really. Will listen to the rest of the stuff you've got posted later at work, between calls. Really weird video tho.

Would certainly be interested in checkin out some Chinese pop/rock. Might not enjoy it quite as much as Japanese or Korean but hey! You never know right? I knew you'd have plenty Scotty =P

Sadly never been much a fan of punk stuff, that last song you put up wasn't bad. Mostly was the singer that was good for me. Drummer was rather bland, could hear no bass most of the time (I love the bass guitar), and guitar's were fine. Not really entirely my style. Like I said though singer was great.

At least now I'll have some new music for a while.

There's actually some pretty good Chinese artists out there, its more in the same vein as K-Pop as opposed to J-Pop. I only have modern artists for the time being though.

Try this out and see if you like it.

Cherry Boom - 不对也要爱
---------------------------------
Here's a bunch of modern material for you to check out..

Girls' Generation - RunDevilRun
Brown Eyed Girls - Sixth Sense
Miryo & JeA - Love Is
E.via - Hey

J-Pop:
KOTOKO - Re-Sublimity
MELL - No Vain
Nami Tamaki - Believe
She - Generic Eric
Ami Suzuki - White Key
Yellow Generation - Carpe Diem
T.M. Revolution - Zips
T.M. Revolution - Heart of Sword
OLIVIA - Space Halo (2:50-3:27 too bad there's not enough of this part.)

J-Rock:
Cymbals - Happy Knight, Shiny Child
HYDE - Season's Call
L'Arc-en-Ciel - Cradle
SUPERCAR - Wonder Word
SUPERCAR - Nijiiro Darkness <3
Siam Shade - 1/3 No Junjou na Kanjou
Qurulu - WORLD'S END SUPERNOVA
School Food Punishment - Art Line
School Food Punishment - You May Crawl (You might really like this one)

Electronic (Ambient, Downtempo, Trance, etc):
Kaito - Holding a Baby <3
Hiroshi Watanabe - Get It By Your Hands
Woodblue - I Won't Say Anything More
Yoshinori Sunahara - Lovebeat
Yoshinori Sunahara - Spiral Never Before
Rei Harakami - Nijizou
Rei Harakami - Pone
Naoki Kenji - Seaside Club
Takashi Wada - Memory of John Astor
Takashi Wada - Magic Smoke
Cheiko Kinbara - Apple Store session

Was hard throwing her in one of the categories above, so I'll just put it by itself: Eiko Shimamiya - Electric Universe, she's got a lot of really good stuff so it's a good thing she just survived her bout with cancer.

Also, since you love m.o.v.e. then you'll like this old duo who rose alongside them: Two-Mix. They have a lot of older tracks where the guy raps with her singing.

If this isn't enough, I'll post more. I'll throw in all retro in the next one.

I liked this one. It was soft and slow but nice.
Cherry Boom - 不对也要爱

K-pop:

This one was different, but I liked it. It was almost bluesy.
Girls' Generation - RunDevilRun

This one I liked for the music video namely. Didn't care for the background music so much. The vocals were very good though.
Brown Eyed Girls - Sixth Sense

Judging by the title I know what this is about X3 This one was very good overall.
Miryo & JeA - Love Is

Most of the appeal of rap for me is clever lyrics, and even though this is in a different language I can tell she's skilled. Still have no idea what she's saying but she knows how to rhyme. Languages are amazing.
E.via - Hey

J-Pop:

Awesome techno for the music. Loved it. Singer merely complimented the music to me. This one's all about the music. After listening all the way through I realized it wasn't one or the other, rather the song as a whole.
KOTOKO - Re-Sublimity

At this point in the list I think this is my favorite one sofar, it may change down the list but if I don't say anything about it... this one.
MELL - No Vain

Didn't even finish this one. Lifeless vocals entwined with a very bland track made go bleeeeeeeeh.
Nami Tamaki - Believe

This one was really cool. I'm assuming this is dubstep? If so I like it but I think I'd be very picky with it, though I enjoyed this one.
She - Generic Eric

This one was okay. Not bad or good.
Ami Suzuki - White Key

This video is no longer available =P
Yellow Generation - Carpe Diem

This one was cool, but some parts I liked and others I didn't.
T.M. Revolution - Zips

HOLY SHENANIGANS! He does this song? I love this song. So happy I know who this is now!
T.M. Revolution - Heart of Sword

This song is sad... Good though.
OLIVIA - Space Halo (2:50-3:27 too bad there's not enough of this part.)

J-Rock:

Was okay, very happy but showing me a liver version first prolly isn't a good idea unless they perform REALLY well live.
Cymbals - Happy Knight, Shiny Child

Sexy asian man with a sexy voice and sexy guitars. This song... is sexy, and I like it.
HYDE - Season's Call

Kind of a slow song, and a bit sad. Has some jazzy/bluesy feels to it. Honestly, a little like Pink Flloyd. Pretty good.
L'Arc-en-Ciel - Cradle

Very relaxing song. Good easy listening but I liked it. Weird video though o.o
SUPERCAR - Wonder Word

Sephi hates this one. I liked it though. It's slow, but it builds up, and there's a lot to this song. More than just on the surface. Very good.
SUPERCAR - Nijiiro Darkness <3

I probably wouldn't like too much from these guys, but this song was good.
Siam Shade - 1/3 No Junjou na Kanjou

This was really good. Very musically done. Seemed very focused on the melodies and such. Very good song.
Qurulu - WORLD'S END SUPERNOVA

This song reminded me of Katamari Damaci a bit. Not bad at all. Pretty good if very consistent throughout much of the song. Only complaint is that organ thing being SO LOUD.
School Food Punishment - Art Line

I really do like this one. It's neato, I like the bass, and everything in general prettymuch. The intro was very echo-y and made my brain recoil a little but was fine after that.
School Food Punishment - You May Crawl (You might really like this one)

Electronic (Ambient, Downtempo, Trance, etc):

This is a very ambient track, very much suited to being left in the background while you do something. I think I could meditate to this really. Probably some of the better techno I've heard really.
Kaito - Holding a Baby <3

This one sounded like the last one, but not as good X3
Hiroshi Watanabe - Get It By Your Hands

This one was interesting. I liked it but I don't think I'd listen to it all the time.
Woodblue - I Won't Say Anything More

Another track meant for background although less ambient and a bit more dum & bass. I liked it, but another track I wouldn't listen to all the time.
Yoshinori Sunahara - Lovebeat

Definetly liked this one. Was interesting. Forgive me for skipping through some of these... but it takes a while to listen to them all! Still gonna start gettin some of these like this one.
Yoshinori Sunahara - Spiral Never Before

This was a happy track and kept changing it up enough to keep my interest. I liked it.
Rei Harakami - Nijizou

This one was really slow and while I did skip some sections I really liked what I heard. Great music here.
Rei Harakami - Pone

This one was another really good background track. I feel like it could be a background track to almost anything.
Naoki Kenji - Seaside Club

Kind of an easy listening song... but I didn't really like it much.
Takashi Wada - Memory of John Astor

This one was better than the last thugh I don't think up to my standards. Not a bad song though by any means.
Takashi Wada - Magic Smoke

Didn't much care for the background music much at all. The violenwork was nice though. I love violens so it was cool. Terrible repetetive background music though >__<
Cheiko Kinbara - Apple Store session

This song is beautiful. I very much liked this one, great music.
Eiko Shimamiya - Electric Universe

This sounds oldschool but you did say it was similar to M.O.V.E. It sounds it. Almost like they could have done music for GUNDAM. It sounds like an anime theme, which is certainly not bad.
Two-Mix

HOLY CRAP SCOTTY!

There... now you know what I like.
