Kinect's Magic Powers Aren't Exclusive To Microsoft: TVs, Computers Coming Soon
The technology behind much of Microsoft's Kinect - PrimeSense - isn't exclusive to the Xbox 360. It'll soon be appearing in other gadgets, from TV sets to computers.
PrimeSense is the tech that lets cameras track and interpret human movements in a three-dimensional space, by bathing the area in infared light then turning what it sees into code. Kinect is the most high profile device currently using it, but by the end of the year there will also be home theatre PCs employing the same technology, and by next year there should be set-top boxes running off motion controls as well.
These new platforms will have similar capabilities as Kinect in terms of motion control, but some of the 360 controller's fancier bits - like voice recognition and the ability to automatically adjust the camera to track a user - are Microsoft tech, so they won't be along for the ride.
