Both versions include updates and patches for glitches, so if you couldn't afford the premium you can still get the updates. Also, as Daemon said, if you have the free version you can only go to knothole and observe what your friend is doing via online co-op. If you have the premium, you can interact with other premium users, go to knothole glade and do the quests etc.
