Know anything about absolute value inequalities?

I'm trying to study all the math I forgot so I don't do too dismally bad on the Math Placement Exam for UMD.

So I hit the third-- wait, no, fourth-- question on the review sheet I got from a teacher and I'm stuck.

If you remember anything, help would be greatly appreciated.

And I also have the answers, I just don't know how/why to get to them. So the answer:

k<-1 or k>1/3

I actually managed to get the right numbers, just not in the right format.

EDIT: Damn, now I feel dumb. As it turns out, my library pays for a 24-hour tutoring service. They explained and it all came flying back.

Re: Know anything about absolute value inequalities?

I hate math. That **** kills my GPA. And by kill I mean "Causes me to have a 4.8 GPA".

Re: Know anything about absolute value inequalities?

You have no idea how rubbish I am at math; it's quite possibly my worst subject after Foreign Languages. Albion Knight, on the other hand, is apparently an absolute genius when it comes to all things math-related. Hopefully, next time he's online, he'll spot this thread and be able to lend a hand.

Like, what the hell is all that??

So wrong to put letters with numbers...*goes back to reading The Phantom Tollbooth and agreeing with King AzAz...*

Re: Know anything about absolute value inequalities?

Hey, I remember the Phantom Tollbooth! That was a good book! But I really don't remember that much. Read it long ago.

On another note, Freak, I hate you and all people who take too many AP courses. This from a guy who is taking three. But I'm only doing that because I already took all available Tech Ed courses and I didn't want to take an actual art class or do a really half-assed English class, though I really should have taken the half-assed English class and slept the whole time. But seriously, you care too much. I've gotten 3.1-3.5 for most of my high school years.

Thanks for the suggestion, Projectego, but I already got help from the startingly helpful tutoring chat program my library pays for. Yay! Of course, I still have the rest of the review sheet to finish.

Also, it makes me feel much better to know I'm not the only person here who utterly sucks ***. Though, actually, I think I'd be good at it if I applied myself. Which I don't.

^Says the man taking three to the guy taking two.

I take AP English and Anatomy and Physiology, the latter which also counts as AP.

(All through High School I've never finished with anything lower than a 3.8)

Re: Know anything about absolute value inequalities?

What is an AP or GPA or whatever the hell they are? Are they exams or something?

Re: Know anything about absolute value inequalities?

AP = Advanced Placement

GPA = Grade Point Average

Wait, did you mean to say 3.8 there? I thought you meant 4.8, which is what you said, which wold mean you were one of the neurotic little grade-obsessed people who annoy me so much.

Ow. I got told. Yeah, I'm taking AP English, Human Geography, and Art History. But I only took Art History because I needed an Art Credit and all the other Art classes actually required you to do art.

Now, tell the truth: are you taking Anatomy and Physiology so you know where to shoot passerby and invading forumers for best effect?

And Angel-- GPA is grade point average-- each letter grade has a numerical value, and it gets averaged out, AP is advanced placement-- high school courses that give you college credit if you pass the final test, and are cheaper than actual college.

But yes, I hate the way my school does GPA. There are four levels of classes, and the grades are valued diffently depending on what you take. I think an AP A is worth five instead of four. And yet the AP courses themselves are no more difficult, from what I've seen, than honors or general.

Your school must do it differently than ours. Instead of giving credits for an AP Class they raise your GPA depending on the grade.

(As long as you pass you still credit for completing the class. Also we only get A's-C's, and F's. There are no D's.)

College Board gives the AP credit if we pass their exam, the school just dicks with our GPAs.

No D's? Why?

We don't get D's because they say D's are just the gap for lazy people to sit in between a passing grade and a failing grade. And they don't allow lazy people in our AP classes. It also makes you work harder because if your choice is between a C or an F you will do better than you normally would.

Re: Know anything about absolute value inequalities?

Huh. I thought that C's were the place for lazy people, and that was why I always got them.

So, apparently, I am not lazy, because I never got D's. YAY! Okay, well, more than a few D's.

On the other hand, it could also be a method of making your grades look higher. With no D's, there's a greater likelihood of more C's to go with more E's. Well, F's, in your case.

bah I know: Danish, Swedish, Norwegian English, Dutch, German and Latin, try that :P

Re: Know anything about absolute value inequalities?

Bah! I know English, English, English, English, English, and English!

And at college, I'm going to take English!

Well, actually, I plan to take Spanish and possibly an Asian language, but still.

Re: Know anything about absolute value inequalities?

Take Bahasa Melayu, the langauge of Malaysia. It is literally the easiest language in the world to learn. (There aren't even any tenses)

Re: Know anything about absolute value inequalities?

Spanish is pretty easy I know some.

Re: Know anything about absolute value inequalities?

I know English, Spanish, and French. I dabble in Latin.

Re: Know anything about absolute value inequalities?

I took a year of Latin, learned very little; and two years of Spanish and middle school of which I remember even less.

So, tell me, droded, how much naval architecture goes on in Malaysia? I know you have the peninsula and part of the island (Borneo, is it called?), so lots of water to travel. Lots of boatbuilding there? Because the reason I want to learn any languages is their usefulness. Spanish because I want to join the Coast Guard and they deal with maritime immigration control (also, buttloads of people in the Americas speak it); and some Asian language because I'm pretty sure there is a lot of navarch going on in the region.

Also, DAMN, this is going off on a tangent. Which is another thing I know very little about. Need to review geometry, too.

4-|3k+1|<2
subtract 4 from both sides
-|3k+1|<-2
multiply both side by -1 (Note the revesal of the < to >)
|3k+1|>2
this now become two equations
3k+1>2 and 3k+1<-2

start with 3k+1>2
subtract 1 from both sides
3k>1
divide both sides by 3
k>1/3

next lets do 3k+1<-2
subtract 1 from both sides
3k<-3
divide both side by 3
k<-1

lets get three valuel of k to test
for k<-1 I'll use k=-2
4-|3k+1|<2
4-|3*-2+1|<2
4-|-6+1|<2
4-|-5|<2
4-5<2
-1>2 YAY! :D

for k>1/3 I'll choose k=1
4-|3k+1|<2
4-|3*1+1|<2
4-|3+1|<2
4-|4|<2
4-4<2
0<2 YAY! :D

now I'll choos a value for which fits niether k<-1 nor k>1/3
k=0
4-|3k+1|<2
4-|3*0+1|<2
4-|0+1|<2
4-|1|<2
4-1<2
3<2 Whis is wrong but that's what I wanted to show so YAY! :D
