Bizarre Creations
From the simple addictive arcade gameplay of Geometry Wars to the high octane racing thrills of the Project Gotham series, Bizarre have produced a consistent string of classics. They haven’t finished yet either, with PGR 4 and innovative new shooter The Club promising further gaming goodness.
Codemasters
A great year for Codies with Colin McRae DIRT heading up an impressive roster, which has seen excellent series like Brian Lara Cricket and the admirable Sensible World of Soccer both make welcome returns to the gaming fold.
Criterion
The Guildford-based developer has two claims to Joystick fame. Not only is it a great games maker in its own right producing classics like Black, the acclaimed Burnout series and Airblade, but its exceptional Renderware engine powered some of the biggest games of the last generation.
Evolution Studios
The racing specialists have produced high octane goodness for year’s untold with the excellent World Rally Championship series, but their reputation was enhanced even further with the release of Motorstorm one of the PS3’s must buy launch titles.
FireFly Studios
CivCity Rome was a classic addition to Firaxis long-running Civ series, but FireFly Studios will always be known for its excellent medieval series Stronghold. With work already begun on a new underground dungeon challenger known as Hero, FireFly remain one of the Uk’s favourite development outfits.
Free Radical
Kicking off with the excellent Timesplitters series, Free Radical Design also produced the intriguing Second Sight for PS2 in 2004. However, the future looks equally bright for the Radicals with the excellent looking Haze well on course, Timesplitters 4 in the works and rumours of a big Star Wars score abounding.
Lionhead
One of the UK’s favourite developers, Lionhead has been responsible for classics like Fable, The Movies and Black and White. Spearheaded by Peter Molyneux’s visionary genius, Lionhead were recently acquired by Microsoft to concentrate on Xbox and PC gaming and the forthcoming Fable 2 is already generating a lot of excitement.
Llamasoft
Jeff Minter has been around since the golden age of UK gaming, when a series of Camel and Llama inspired titles like Gridrunner, Matrix and Attack of the Mutant Camels captured gamers; imaginations. With Software Visualiser Neon powering the Xbox 360 visuals and Space Giraffe, Llamasoft and Jeff Minter remain the most psychedelic UK software house.
Rare
Originally known for its Spectrum classics as Ultimate Play the Game, Rare came to real dominance with the superb GoldenEye 007. Striding the UK development scene like a colourful colossus, and their recent star filled roster has run from Perfect Dark Zero, to Kameo and Viva Pinata while the forthcoming Banjo-Kazooie 3 is eagerly awaited.
Realtime Worlds
The biggest Scottish development studio, Dundee’s Realtime Worlds scored an instant and enduring classic with the release of Crackdown on the Xbox 360 this year. No surprise given their headed up by legendary GTA creator David Jones.
Rockstar North
Born from the ashes of the legendary DMA design, Rockstar North is the team powering the exceptional Grand Theft Auto series and with San Andreas and the handheld City Stories series under their belts it’s no surprise to find them as a strong contender for the UK developer Joystick.
Sony Computer Entertainment London Studio
Europe’s largest internal development studio, Sony London has provided many of the PlayStation’s standard bearers including the classic Karaoke series, SingStar, several of the fine EyeToy offerings and classic crime ‘em-up The Getaway. With a PS3 Getaway and SingStar in the works, plus the splendid Home, Sony London continues to go from strength to strength.
Sports Interactive
Although a quick foray into the world of NHL Eastside Hockey Manager proved interesting, Sports Interactive will forever be associated with the amazing Championship Manager series. Now evolved into the equally compelling Football Manager, it continues to be UK footy fans favourite hour absorber.
Team 17
Beginning in the classic Amiga days with classics the like of Alien Breed, Assassin and Project-X, Team 17 evolved to produce one of the most popular series in gaming the classic Worms franchise which won them a worldwide audience of wriggly fans.
Traveller's Tales
Founded in 1990, Traveller’s Tales have a huge roster of classics already under its belt including Super Monkey Ball Adventure, Lego Star Wars II and Transformers. The forthcoming LEGO Batman and LEGO Indiana Jones will cement their place as one of the UK’s favourite developers.
