London Universities?

I've decided that moving to London is something I want to do in the future, and that the only way I'm going to get there is to get accepted into a uni over there. Does anyone know what the good unis for music over there?

Re: London Universities?

There's always the Royal Academy of Music but you have to be insanely good - like on an epic scale. Most uni's will offer a music department that might take overseas admissions - Royal College of Music, Royal Holloway music department (one of the largest in the country) - those three are the top ones to gun for, IMO - but don't forget that London is stupidly expensive. If you do come over, live out of town to save you some money...

Re: London Universities?

Why don't you try Leeds College of Music, I know they accept students from over seas and you'll have more chance of getting in than at the Royal academy (who are so picky and snobby it's unbelievable!) I know everyone fancies the bright lights of london, but try other places in the uk, there are alot of great colleges and unis over here and if you head away from london it'll probably cost you a lot less!

Re: London Universities?

Yeah, and I have to say that cost is a major obstical for an unemployed kid from a working class family trying to pay off a mortgage.

But I don't know if it would be the same as London....

But I'm thinking of actually full on emigrating, not just visiting.

Re: London Universities?

Hey if you come over, we may somehow end up in the same university. Excited?

Re: London Universities?

Yeah lol. I'll be leaving at the end of next year (or whenever you guys start you're school year, it'll be 2010).

I look forward to many an evening of Fable 2 Co op with you the Droded

London is gonna cost you about ten thousand (uk pound) per term for your uni fees, then you need accommodation, six thousand, living costs, unless your planning on living on one loaf of bread a week your looking at five thousand, it ain't cheep, London is 20% more expensive to live in than anywhere else in the country. you can apply for aid, but you have to prove that your the greatest thing going in music and that they would be fools to turn you down, but that still won't cover all of your costs, and it's getting harder and harder to get into the uk now, you won't get full citizenship for being a student :( so if you want to stay after uni you'll have to apply for that in order to stay. It ain't easy but if you really want to do it speak to a careers advisor or a guidance counsellor (if your school has them)

London SUCKS (sorry for any londoners here but it really does)

People are rude, obnoxious and no one has time for anyone else...everything is incredibly expensive - there is nothing cheap apart from the pigeon crap.

Seriously, pick somewhere near to London, if you are dead set on going there, (but not High Wycombe coz that's a dive) - maybe a town off the M25 (motorway that circles London). You'll save yourself a packet because as Skorm's already said you're looking at thousands of pounds just for basic living, let alone actually having a life. Sure, the nightlife can be awesome - but it's not so great if you're under 21 and have no money - security is tighter in London now seeing as everyone even remotely non-white is apparently waiting to blow up in a train station  and nobody likes students anyway, so you'll turn up with that stigma fully attached before you get through customs.

Our current econonmic climate means everything is up in the air, finance wise. In the space of a week, your basic loaf of supermarket brand bread went from 19p to about 44p - housing markets (including rents) are completely messed up and if you want a loan, join the queue and pay about 29% interest.

If you rent, get some people to rent with as even outside of London (within about a 50 mile radius) you're looking at about £750 per month just for two bedrooms (not inclusive of council tax although if you're a student you may be able to have tax waived - but I don't know about overseas students.) Plus many landlords will not lease to students...as for buying (not that I expect you'll be even thinking about that!), well put it this way - £150,000 will get you one bedroom on the top floor of a manky tower block.

The further north you go, the cheaper things are so perhaps looking at a uni towards the midlands and north england might be more financially viable. London is accessible by train/plane/car/coach etc from pretty much any destination in england and so you can go there, see what you think and enjoy it without spending a fortune. Jobs are super-scarce these days and you'll find that London will offer little in terms of (example) bar work or waiting tables - even fast food restaurants will be full up with largely Eastern European workers because they are willing to work for crap wages and long hours. And almost every student - even those who can afford their fees - end up getting some sort of part time work to keep the cash flow going.

Like Skorm said, talk it over with a guidance counsellor of sorts and do your research - you never know there might be a decent deal for studying/living in the South East and it doesn't end up being as expensive as you thought - but be prepared just in case and know your budget before you get here.

Re: London Universities?

Yeah.. Angels making sense lol. I really have my heart set on London though...

I talked to my careers counciler and he said that my main problem would be money and my school work (but I would work my arse off if it pays off with me going to England).

Also, no one happens to know where abouts in England has the best music scene? (preferably not to far away from London)

Also, my grandmother is an English Citizen (and I think my dad too, but I'd have to check) so that might get me some brownie points with the government emigration wise.

Re: London Universities?

Best music scene? Dunno - it depends on what music you like. Manchester is amazing music-wise but it's super far from London, so not so good...

Actually, Universities all over have pretty good music scenes because a lot of bands starting out will play at Student Union Bars for next to nothing. Personally I'd recommend spending time going around pubs/bars to listen to bands and you'll find some pretty awesome talent wherever you are.

We have great music festivals too all around the country (V Festival, Glastonbury, T in the park, Greenbelt etc) so even if you wind up somewhere a bit crap (but cheaper) there will be something going on all the time. If you can, get to Edinburgh in time for the festival (and pre-festival celebrations) because that's not to be missed.

About your family ties with UK - have you checked whether you get British nationality by relation? My neighbour is Canadian and his kids (born here) got instant dual nationality so they can live in both nations. Wasn't sure if the same applied to Australia, given our histroy with you lot...

Re: London Universities?

My family connections are too far removed for me to be considered for that. It'd need to be my parents who were born there. That being said, my dad has the right to claim British Citizenship so maybe I can score something from that.

But my guitar teacher said that London had a really good music scene, and hes English (think he's from London, but dont know.)

Re: London Universities?

Oh London does have a great music scene - of course it does. But if you can't afford to go there all that often/live there then other unis, bars etc will have some brilliant acts.

Milk everything you can out of any family connections you can think of...something might come of it.

Re: London Universities?

Oh, I`d like to study abroad. My neighbor went to Denmark for six months. But first, I have to get to an Uni here.
