Lost Planet Review And Info
This game came to my attention with a simple trailer a while back and i have to say it looked really impressive. The levels looked very atmospheric and eerie in the snow covered wastelands and the enemies and theme for the game looked like it was going to be a sure fire hit. Well before buying it i was contacted by M80 (see link at bottom of page) and sent a free copy by them to do my own review or article on it, and here it is.
Story
Lost Planet, takes place on a hostile planet covered with arctic tundra. Human snow pirates inhabit this planet as well as the Akrid who the Snow Pirates realise contain precious thermal energy they need to survive in the cold temperatures. The main character of the game is Wayne, who was trapped in a battle with the Akrid with his father & death almost seemed imminent until he was rescued, however his father was not. He can only remember parts of his past including the slaying of his father by the Akrid known as 'Green Eye'. Vowing revenge for the death of his father you must set about the planet to find 'Green Eye' and take it down as well as any Akrid in your way, but is all as it seems?
My Review
Upon first booting up Lost Planet i have to say the GFX are stunning and nothing short of what i had seen in all the videos. The environments look amazing and the scale of the levels and detail is just breathtaking and have some of the best explosion effects and particle effects ive seen to date.
My first thought about the actual gameplay was well it looks similar to Gears Of War and in really small ways it is kind of similar as its a 3rd Person shooter with gorgeous GFX and powerful weapons etc. Thats where the similarity ends though as they handle very different and play out very different. Lost Planet throws alot of enemies at you at one time ranging from a few small enemies to large enemies to an all out war.Plus Lost Planet is an all out shooter where you just blast everything and destroy things. I found the aiming reticule very hard to get used to at first as i expected the character to run the way i aimed but this is not the case as you can shoot sideways as you run etc.
Each enemy you kill or each piece of machinery you destroy leaves behind a small puddle of thermal energy that helps to restore your constantly draining supply. This system is quite an interesting one as it makes you keep moving to look for more things to kill instead of just wandering around and running out of thermal energy is never really an issue as there is PLENTY of things to kill and destroy.
The weapons are have a nice variety to them and you are handed with some real nice firepower and some nice mechs to take the akrid down (especcily the big ones). The guns sound nice and the explosions of grenades and fuel barrels looks amazing. The Mechs or (vital suits) range from simple walkers and transforming snowmobiles to chainsaw equipped monsters of a machine and more also the guns can be ripped and carried around on foot.
Only drawbacks about the game are that the thermal system makes you feel you are on a constant time limit and although you dont have to worry about it to much as there are plenty of enemies to kill for extra, you still feel rushed at times. This prevents you from exploring the levels to much and you really want to as they look stunning. Also the plot doesnt really make much sense and you could watch most of the cutscenes and still not know exactley whats going on. However if you like your games with plenty of blasting, killing, big weapons, and gorgeous levels then buy it.
I cant comment about the multiplayer as i dont have Xbox Live yet but i will comment about it when i get it.
